As someone who's had to do an emergency stop in a car other than a driving instructors car, having not done one for over a decade past the test, I can confirm that my vehicle stopped extremely quickly and it hurt. The figures in the Highway Code, for me and my vehicle at that time, were wildly inaccurate. From the video I have, have measured 40 metres, in the wet, from 60mph. The Highway Code says 73 metres in the dry at that speed.

People's cars generally haven't just rolled off the factory floor, and when you know you need to brake when you pass a flag, you're going to factor in the thinking distance and be ready to start braking when you pass the flag, which is not a realistic scenario. You can't say it's very scientific

What people fail to realise is that the Highway Code was written back when cars had pathetic drum brakes with no power assistance and no ABS, and with crossply tyres and not modern radials Even with reaction time factored in, the Highway Code massively overestimates the distance needed to stop. It isn’t 1931 anymore and it badly needs updating to reflect the actual distances that modern vehicles can stop in, even average ones would stop miles behind the highway code’s stopping distance

it doesn't overestimate anything; that stopping distance is what's optimal for the driver (whiplash anyone?), optimal for your fuel efficiency, optimal for your brakes, etc. Try to break under the highway code guidelines and see how quickly you warp your rotors, burn out gas/petrol, and overall feel unhappy with the driving experience.

which in the uk is always weird coz they based their 110km/h limit on the maximum acceptable braking distance. But this is perhaps the reason why the limit is so poorly enforced there. I cant remember what the true limit should be with a modern car. 140 or 150 perhaps would get it up to the 100m.

This is all fun and stuff, but this test only measures braking distance, while the Highway code talks about stopping distance. Although I think those distances are still shorter than written in code, a better test would be to give drivers an audio signal to brake, which sounds when the car is at speed, and always with random offsets. That way, you can average out the reaction time and braking time, getting to a more realistic measure of stopping distance.

Only stupid people can think that this is an example of how authorities are dumb and speed limits should be much higher because modern cars can brake better than the old ones and that is where all of them wrong. The thing is this test is leaving out the fact that in real road situation you are not expecting something to happen and there is drivers reaction time that is around 1 second and on the speed of 60 mph it is around 26 meters before you actually tap your brakes. The road is also not always clean and warm and provides the same amount of traction as shown in this show. And the cars you are driving not all BMW and Bentleys. There is also fun fact when good brakes and reaction time can play bad luck with you because someone behind you might be missing both of them which can result in them smashing into your car from the back and happens regularly.

You also have to take into account that Aussie cars use kilometres per hour, as opposed to miles per hour. If you convert 60miles to kilometres, you get roughly 96km. So if they were going by the speedometers in the cars, then that means they were unintentionally breaking far sooner than they should’ve done.

Stopping distances were done on a Ford Anglia which had around drum brakes making it the car with the worst stopping distances. So everything else would stop shorter, that's why Jeremy. 70 is the top speed on the stopping distances because that's how fast it could go.

The braking test as conducted does not account for thinking time as many here have said, because the braking is pre-meditated (i.e. they start braking from a known point). However, the 240 foot distance they compare it to comes from the UK Highway Code which INCLUDES thinking time. If you exclude said reaction time, the distance they should be comparing it to is 180 feet; a distance all these vehicles still blitz anyway. That said, there is a school of thought that says that the "thinking time" in the Highway Code is actually underestimated and should be greater, so it kind of evens out a bit. Still good to know that at least the mechanics and engineering to shorten stopping distances is there. Drive safe, folks.

There are lies dammed lies and Clarkson lies. The Bentley stopped in less than 240 feet because that's not the complete stopping distance distance shown in the highway Code. The actual 'BRAKING DISTANCE shown the H. C. is 180ft and then one has to add on the thinking and reaction distance that actually makes the full stopping distance a full 240ft or thereabouts. So once more he got it wrong. Yes the Bentley managed to stop at 60 mph in that 180ft. but, and its a big but the Bentley is a very expensive car with the very best brakes that money can buy and not to any ones imagination a normal average every day sort of car which should be used to test braking distances. So any car used should be any normal runabout and then be fully laden with passenger and luggage to make it a worthwhile test as we are aiming for the worst case scenario and not the best one. The worst stoppers not the industries very best that money can buy, well Clarkson can buy anyway. So sorry Clarkson nice try but wrong again.

what people fail to realise is that the stopping distance is done with one car travelling in one direction with no other vehicles around, if you were to factor in real life situation stopping distances are still relevant to a degree, for example if you are doing 60 mph on a single lane carrigeway and there is a car coming towards you on the wrong side of the road, you have a closing distance of 120mph, whats the stopping distance? i dont know but i bet it`ll be around about what the highway code says for 60mph for a single car
