Lovely, even though that engine doesn't sound right for a unit that old. Do my eyes decieve me, or is that an old Southern Region MK4 motor truck, with EE507 motors, as used on the old EMUs I worked on, like 4CEPs, '63 CIGs, EPB/HAPs and the like ?

They were'nt allowed to use a petrol engine ( safety ) So they got a modern Cummins engine and used an ex Southern Region motor truck . It works

I'd hate to pay for the petrol such a big lump would use now ! Not surprising that they went for the Diesel Cummins. Thought that was an old SR motor truck, thanks for the information.

DIESELISATION of the only surviving NER Autocar. Hopefully, it will enable it to survive until more appropriate running gear can be found.

Shame they didn't keep any Tyneside EMU motor trucks from then. Would more than likely have been the same design as the originals. Or the LYR 1916 motor trucks used as trolleys in Bury EMU shed. These were scrapped as late as the 1990's. But the MK4 BR(S) will do, and has the EE 507s in it, the trailer appears to be one from a SR EPB/HAP unit. As for the petrol engine, well the cost of running on petrol would be horrific now. In the USA they were looking for alternatives for their "Gas Electric" railcars as early as the 1920s, they cost too much to run. The Gas Electrics were built for the same sort of cross-country branchline service as this old NER one.

World's first electric train? Still, why let facts get in the way of journalism?

You are right, they left out the "self powered" bit. It is the world's first self powered electric train.
