29.8 MPG !? 😮 I feel like I just saw Bigfoot riding a unicorn .

That was recorded when driving down from mountain pass. The best real MPG I could get was 24.5 on that 65-mile roundtrip. Maximum speed 70mph downhill minimum speed 55mph uphill while driving most of time between 58 to 62mph, avoiding hard acceleration etc. IMO and based on my experience with different toyota/lexus cars/trucks you can get 10 percent better mpg over claimed highway mpg by factory. This is going to be significantly easier on newer models with newer and improved gearboxes without compromising your speed.

There is actually a TSB for this which includes taking out the rear seats and using padding on both sides and changing some brackets.

That TSB is related to some harmonic noise causing by air flow passing through some part of body or chassis. The nature of this issue is completely different from that. To confirm it, the truck was taken to dealership and they checked the noise on jack where there is pure mechanical noise and no wind noise. The noise was coming from rear differential.

@@mikevar7961 ahhh got ya..mine sounds bad around 55 mph. I can actually control it by touching and letting off the gas peddle

@@feustond Then it might be the same issue. I thought the issue is with my truck so I trade in the one on video and got a brand new one. It seems that the noise is at the same level after putting 5k on the new one. The noise is loudest between 56 to 58mph. Toyota says it is normal!

I have a TRD 2022 33k I just bought, and it howls between 40-60mph at 1300rpm Seems like it’s a thing for most Tacoma’s

@greenwind22 yup 106k miles and mine still does it badly. I changed my leafs and added a new lift and it didn't do it for the longest time and started again lol.

Toyota switched to importing their rear axles from overseas. These new rear diffs have been nothing but problems. Some howl worse than others and Toyota insists it's wind noise or other resonances. The problem is that some guys have put their trucks up on a lift, put the truck in gear and the noise was undeniably coming from the differential.

Aye welcome to the club my man, grab a seat, get a drink cause it aint never goin away, it also won't ever hurt anything. Had it on my 2017 trd off road since my first gear oil change at 30k, now im at 80, it's the exact same. Never really bothered me tho, never had the money for good enough at's so I buy cheap M/S and just run them all year round. gets the jobs done but it ain't pretty, just like the Tacoma so it's a good fit.

Same noise I was experiencing on my 2018 DC SR5. It would happen between 50-60 MPH when ever I took my foot off that gas. Always went away after accelerating again. Dealership replaced rear diff bearing, said it was due to excessive heat. Six thousand miles later and the noise is starting again.

I was not sure by the title of video that this was the same issue that I was having, however after hearing and reading description there are a lot of similarities. Like you the noise usually starts off around 45 to 60 mph, and like you it started very faint but has increased over time. For me it is inconsistent and when I took it in last to the dealership the noise was faint and not as annoying as it is usually. The dealership had it for two days and could not find anything wrong (nothing would flash on computer as an error). The noise that I am experiencing seems to be coming from the steering area and instead of a howling it sounds similar to the traction control sound when you loose traction (similar to the noise you recorded). Have you found a solution for your problem yet? if so please share.
