FLDS are the werewolves. LDS are the vampires. Volturi are the temple in SLC. The vampires want your life, they will feed on you and you will die, happy or terrorized, whichever. But they are after your soul, seducing you the whole time. Their success, their beauty their community their accumulated wealth, it’s all seductive and very enticing. But the fact of what they are is the premise that is so unacceptable, that you will lose your soul, that you will be doomed if you truly become one of them. Edward represents whichever thing attracts you to it LDS, be it the physical attraction, the old world charm, the old-soul, the seriousness, the way he looks longingly at what he cannot have without destroying (you), the riches, the community, …whatever it is that may attract you to LDS, that’s what Edward is. I’ve watched a lot of lonely people be seduced by them, and the effect always reminds me of Twilight, even the slowness. In the end, they do almost kill the Volturi, but when the Volturi see they would be defeated, they have a choice. Very much a parable

I feel like you were really on point until you described it as a reactio to and rejection of Mormon Ideology. I think the "have her cake and eat it too" applies there as well.

Joseph smith was a freemason. The bloodline oaths show in mormonism. I went to a mormon church once and it seemed fine. I grew up roman catholic but kinda went non denominational. Mormons aren't recognized as Christian and i see more and more why.

There is no subverting being done, its just a description of an ideal situation that the author came up with, yet it still exists within the mormon framework and if anything, it glorifies it by highlighting the good parts about immortal power fantasy and omitting all of the bad stuff about racism and the fact that it is a male centred power fantasy.

Mormons in Idaho and Utah are bat ship crazy and brainwashed. They know its a joke, but they need the control it gives the men, who are actually pretty docile as a whole. Thank god real Americans are moving in a nd taking over this region.

So, to sum up, you kind of seem like you are criticizing Mormonism to attract viewers but, in the end, you try to convince us to embrace Mormonism by saying that that which is obviously Mormonism is a critic of Mormonism? yeah, nope.

When i was growing up (my family is all very devout Mormons, i got out) and these books came out, everyone in my moms Relief Society loved these books. They made it into a book club, they went to go see the movies together, and since i loved to read they all recommend she get me to read them. Luckily, my mom couldnt stand Twilight. She made it partway through the second book before giving up and asking her sister to tell her what happens in the rest of them, and actually had to leave the theater when her friends took her to see one of the movies bc she couldnt stop laughing at parts of it that weren't supposed to be funny. Needless to say, she actively encouraged me to not read them. Any interest i might have had in Twilight as a kid died when i learned it was primarily romance, so my mom talking about how much she disliked them was just the final nail in the coffin

I also don’t think it’s a rejection of Mormonism or that her writing at the time is complex enough to reflect much well of anything. It’s just her saying oh what if I was a vampire and writing a sort of fanfic where she’s the main character. But naturally her belief system does show through her writing. I’ve always wondered why Bella and Edward got married almost immediately, when they had literally forever but I guess I know now.

this was so great! I didn't know much about Mormons, but I've been saying for years that Twilight feels like a religious conversion story in which humans are non-believers and the other types of vampires are no-good believers (they drink from humans), and the Volturi seem very clear catholic people, while the vegetarian vampires are like the legit believers, the only ones who live properly. I loved your analysis and insights! This was a very easy 'hit the bell button' for me.

You should do an essay on Mormonism and The Battlestar Galactica series, both of them are dripping with Mormon ideas and actual things like the planet Kobol which is a light anagram for Kolob. That is just one example. The Iceberg on this one is deep but I don't know how to make videos but I do know how to research so this is an amazing ride.

jacob/edward as lamanite/ nephite 🤯 i disagree that it is a rejection of mormonism, the proof in your video contradicts your ending thesis. or maybe, i just disagree that mormonism and feminism can exist simultaneously. still, your points were insightful and i can’t wait to see more content from you!

Nobody talking about the fact that Meyer wrote the Edward, the ideal perfect husband, being a white man while the one who tries to make Bella deviate from her path, who puts her into dangerous situations, who falls in love with the protagonist infant daughter and literally turns into an animal, is a brown skinned (or as Meyer likes to say, "red") native american. Like what the fuck. Who thought this was a good idea.

As an active Latter Day Saint I think this is an interesting take. A couple things I think is interesting are 1.) you think women are only for making babies. And that women will not be goddesses but instead be baby making slaves. I’m not sure who the f taught you that but okay. 2.) you do not have to be a Mormon to go to byu. They don’t even ask. 3.) it’s an interesting take for sure. I’ll be honest, I think any ties to Mormonism beneath surface level is a stretch. 4.) imo Jacob would be the “righteous choice”. His family already likes her. She keeps her humanity. His family isn’t tempted to kill her and drink her blood at every second. He is constantly warm, comforting, protective, and fun. Edward is a vampire, which in vampire lore, they made a deal with the devil, either directly or indirectly. Vampires are cold, and in many cases heartless. Vampires embody almost everything that involves evil in many theologies. Vampires have permanently lost their souls.
