I am trying to build this one. But I don't understand how does it work. Like the earth gears, the blue one is rotating without moving where it is yet it is placed on the orange gear that is also rotating. Can someone explain it to me please, I can't finish it😭

Just a general note and reply to some comments: The planetarium/orrery is not intended to model each and every detail. It does not include Uranus and Neptune. It does not include the rotation of the planets and moons itself. It does not include all moons of Jupiter, Saturn, etc. At least you should get the idea on how to do the modeling of planets and moons. Yes, it is important to have the synodic periods of the moons. Siderial periods do not work (I tried it). To find the angles between the Planets you have to get the ephermeris data (orbital elements with for each planet and moon for a certain time (e.g. from NASA or wikipedia). Then you have the according angles that you need to adjust the angles for the gears. I have checked the values also with the program Celestia, just to be sure.

I think the same error might have been made here that Lego just did with their earth/sun/moon orrery.. that the relative motion of the bevel gears (that are transferring the orbital motion of the moon out to the moon itself) are not being taken into account. Therefore the ratio doesn't quite make it to 29.5 each month. Furthermore, the bevel would rotate once even if this were correct, but to go from full moon to full moon (i.e. a true synodic month) you would need the moon to revolve slightly more than 360 degrees due to the relative motion of the earth around the sun. Unless I am missing how these two factors actually cancel out by design and the extra motion of the earth arm, transferred to the bevel gears makes up the difference and 'adds' the correct amount of added degrees of rotation to get to the full moon again in 29.5 days. I need a model to test haha, that is how i found the error in the earth rotation and moon revolution in the lego model, but yours is designed a little different.

hi, really great tutorial ! How did you achieve to finds the angles between each gear axles ? (to finaly align sun and earth gears for exemple) ? The 'geargenerator' online tool, help to simulate and product the gears in 3d models, but it cannot find itself those angles... here you can fin the simulation for earth : geargenerator.com/#200,200,50,300,1,7,146173.8,8,1,10,0.6666666666666666,15,20,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,89,5.933333333333334,15,20,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,10,0.6666666666666666,15,20,0,0,0,0,0,2,0,38,2.533333333333333,15,20,115,0,0,0,0,3,1,10,0.6666666666666666,15,20,0,0,0,0,0,4,0,36,2.4,15,20,140,0,0,0,0,5,1,10,0.6666666666666666,15,20,0,0,0,0,0,6,0,30,2,15,20,220,0,0,0,0,0,1,3,-998

Hi so you've actually out all the files up to download? 😁 I'm very very tempted to make this in the real world as is another I see. It looks as though this thing will be bloody massive 😂

What i don't think this model takes in to consideration is how all the gears are going to be fixed to each other at the centers. Each gear has a center shaft and you can see in the model the shafts that need to be fixed would have to run through another gears' path.

Hi.Joe S。Thank you for you great job! I'm making this thing, but I found a problem. At3: 22, the shaft of the Yellow gear will be covered with purple. So it actually needs to be adjusted.
@joes1470
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Yang Xu, I assume you mean the idler yellow gear? The yellow idler gear is between the green and the purple gear, and under the red gear. So the shaft of the yellow gear is under the red gear. If you think that is too close then just increase the distance between the purple and the red gear. Another question: you are "making" this thing means that you are building it in Blender or in reality?
Yes, Orrerys exist in the real world, however they are a little less accurate in order to physically work. The most accurate I know is the „Genesis Orrery“ by Staines and Son (check them out on KZitem)
