I dig his 1971 studio version with Leon Russell and Friends just a bit more. There is even a sister cooking during the session. Hey, you can't go wrong with a Blues and cornbread.

This is the song I remember, something about it that endures for me, and his appearance, but lets face it In 1972, we had Johnny winter, Alice cooper, tiny Tim sly stone ….I think he was hiding himself under the hair and top hat.

Everyone here, such fun we would all have reminiscing together about "the day"! (The "day" of "back in the day fame" 🥰)! One thing for absolute certain; yes there were protests, some riots, a war no one wanted, so many deaths, so much (what did they call it, the word eludes me) OH so much "civil unrest". BUT, we always come together on the bottom line ! which is "we wouldn't have missed those days for love or money!!! Once in a lifetime AND WE WERE THERE. 👍How blessed we never knew at the time! Yet, ALL OF US REMEMBER THOSE DAYS WITH LOVE AND INTENSELY HAPPY MEMORIES. God bless each and every one of us here. Definitely older, hopefully wiser, never give up, fight the good fight, confront lies with truth, hate with love, anger with peace, and pain with compassion; you know~ as we always did. God bless you each and your families. Thank you beyond thanks for this hour down memory lane. Listened a few times and replied to some comments.

It's interesting how you can have no idea a person exist and yet know all the lyrics to a song he wrote. The Donny Hathaway version is the one I know and now I am glad to hear this original version as well.

I could not believe it. I'd never heard this version by Leon. I enjoyed it immensely because it was not only great but it just demonstrates what a stylists he could be not only with this mastery of the piano but his voice back when it was still in good shape. Leon was in incredibly hard working musician for the first 20+ years of his career and when he hit it big he was no longer young man, he was Leon Russell, Master of Space and Time. As a songwriter Leon worked for years to learn to write songs and he devoted his energy in search of writing 'standards', songs that other musicians would want to perform and record, songs that would live beyond a single high point on the charts for a few weeks. A Song For You, was his masterpiece in that capacity and the statistics and covers by other artists, prove the provenance of that song. Jackson Browne, says it's his favorite song, truly. Thanks a heck of an endorsement. There are other artists who had more hits but there was one and only one Leon Russell. He made a mark a foot wide on music history.
