Bruce, great question. It did OK on the beach except going uphill and very soft sand, wet sand or sand. It flew over. If I were to do it again, I would make the front wheels even bigger. The inexpensive lawnmower wheels are too hard and round, even when fully deflated to work super unreal sugar, sand.

The treaded rod is fine. Remember, the rods have spacers over them. I gave it to a guy 300+lbs. and it has been fine. The chair did not do great on soft sand. The big tires are to hard. Even with no air they scrub out a lot.

Hey Charlie it's Jim quick from Connecticut, I like that shop of yours, I have to get up there one of these days to see it. I like the job you guys did on that chair definitely very simple and definitely would work great to get out of the beach. I'll keep in touch I really want to get that Bounder wheelchair going this summer for sure I've got some jobs for it to get around a job site for an accessible Trail at the nature center near my house. I'm spoiled with the tractors that's usually what I get out on the property with but a wheelchair would definitely be very comfortable and easy to jump into just to run out and have some fun. Keep up the great work you can continue to be an inspiration in my life.

Love the ingenuity of your projects. I just bought a foldable power chair, should get it this Friday. I'm going to have to figure out how to get it in and out of the back of my 2002 F-150. The back seat folds up so I hope I will have enough clearance to get it in an out with the front seat pushed forward all the way. I'm thinking I will just build some type of ramp that can fold up inside the door and be able to close them. It's a club cab.

Yes, I took it to a beach and it wasn't that great. The tires are too round and hard. Even with no air they were too stiff. Plus the back trailing wheels dragged a lot instead of rolled. It did great on harder sand, but not 'sugar' sand up hill. It did better going backwards also.

Pay attention to Charlie. He has mentored and assisted people with their mobility for over 50 years. There is not another human on earth who has positively impacted the lives of those with a physical disability, as Charlie. I was fortunate to have had Charlie roll into my hospital room during my Spinal Cord Injury rehab at Boston University Hospital in 1976. We have remained friends since. It is because of Charlie that I was able to start the University of Illinois(u-c) Wheelchair Racing Team in 1982. Charlie drove me out to Champaign in 1980 and he helped me get oriented to academics and athletics at the oldest Collegiate Wheelchair Sports Program in the world. Charlie helped me overcome my fear of teaching and now, 40 years later, Wheelchair Athletes at Illinois have accrued over 70 Paralympic or Olympic medals. Our Road Racers have also accrued 18 wins at the Granddaddy of Wheelchair Road Racing, the Boston Marathon. Thanks Charlie, Be well my brother.

BEING A BIKERMAMMA ALL MY LIFE UNTIL MY ACCIDENT, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME THING TO PUT THE WHEEL CHAIR UP TO THE MOTORCYCLE, LESS THAN THE COST OF A NEW TRUCK OR BIKE. I SEEN A COUPLE OF THEM FROM EUROPE BUT THEY ARE AROUND 15 TO 20 GRAND. LET'S REVIEW, BELOW THE POVERTY LEVEL INCOME. I HATE THE MOBILITY COMPANIES BECAUSE THEY ALL THINK YOUR MADE OF MONEY. CONGRESS AND INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE THE WORST. DID YOU KNOW THAT THOSE CROOKS SAID A WHEEL CHAIR IS A "RECREATIONAL VEHICLE" IT TOOK ME A YEAR JUST TO GET A REGULAR WHEELCHAIR. YEPPER!

To all my brothers and sisters with a spinal cord injury. Pay attention to Charlie Croteau and his new channel. Charlie has been a leader in the field of mobility and "SCI life" for over 50 years. In 1976, Charlie rolled into my room at the SCI Rehab unit on Robbie 7 at Boston University Medical Center. Following a traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in 1975, it took me over two years to overcome all of the associated medical issues related to my TSCI. Charlie taught me how to traverse the still accessibility challenged City of Boston Mass. In the Fall of 1976 I was finally discharged from Robbie 7. Charlie and other close friends talked me into enrolling at Massasoit Community College, in Brockton, MA. In 1977, Charlie Croteau and Nils Jorgensen talked me into attending an open house at the West Roxbury, VA. From 1977-81 Charlie, Nils and I attended competitions in the northeast corridor as members of the New England Paralyzed Veterans of America. In 1980, Charlie and I traveled together to our first National Wheelchair Games at the University of Illinois. I was in love with the Illinois program on first sight. Charlie talked me into visiting with the admissions people at Illinois. In the Spring of 1981, Charlie drove with me back out to the University of Illinois and where he "mothered me" through the orientation process. In Fall of 1981, I was on campus in Urbana-Champaign where I coached for the next 23 years as a staff member in the Illinois "world class" wheelchair sports program. Following retirement in 2005, I have stayed involved volunteering in wheelchair sports as a mentor and as a coach. None of my success would have been possible without the love and support from Charlie Croteau. So pay attention to this channel. Trust me, the one thing I can promise you, hanging with Charlie and his friends you will never experience a lack of entertainment, especially in the wild world of wheelchair sport, recreation and education. All the best with your channel Charlie. Thanks for being my big brother during a very dark time in my life. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you Charlie. I still owe you for at least another couple of decades of service. Thanks for believing in me Charlie.
