I think that this technology is near Kashima Shin Ryu. This is not Kendo but Kenjutsu. Kenjutsu has a lot of sects.

+Dan Loving if it's shinkendo, the kesa giri should come from the top of the head assuming jodan kamae, and not from hasso kamae. so it definitely is not shinkendo.

Some schools do, and exactly this style. You can even find them for sale under the Aikido section at Ebogu's store. I highly recommend Ebogu, by the way, I've used their gear for years. No dojo I've trained in use these, but then Aikido comes in a lot of different flavors and affiliations.

The attire, style of shinai, and kumi tachi are all clues that what we're seeing here is a pair of Aikido practitioners performing a version of aiki ken. The techniques shown would not, then, be intended to represent a traditional sword art but rather be paired with the hand-to-hand techniques to provide mindfulness of the dynamics of combat. At least, that's my two cents ^^"

I live in Canada; not a lot of guns floating around here. There are some, but I don't see illegal ones very often. I'm allowed to own one, but my wife is really against them. I tried to point out that a sword is designed to do the same thing, just less efficiently: she remains opposed. Doesn't make any sense to me, but I want to get laid so I shut up about the issue.

Shit, this is great for home defense right here. My wife won't allow firearms in the house; a sword is an effective means of mangling intruders without pissing her off.

Indeed i have seen the video again and for me is clear that the sensei got many problems trying to show this katas because his assistant doesnt know almost nothing of the right structures of the kata i mean the attack, the distance, momentum etc, sensei couldnt really explain the meaning of the tecniques he showed
@acorralesgarrido
11 жыл бұрын
if he jump back and save his arm and try to counterattack, your sword will raise from down and will stab him in the neck, thats was the way i receive an explanation of the meaning of this kata even if this sensei and his student doesnt perform in a complete way that a person who doesnt know the meaning of this kata can understand by simple viewing, greetings!!!!!!!!

this katas are based in kashima shin ryu kenjutsu, ura tachi series, and that series is designed to show how to face "uncorrect" attacks, so all this kata required some kind of wrong attack, but in this kata at 4.30 in my opinion is not enough explained, the atacker try to cut head the defender cut the right arm with a slash until the ground almost, not stoping at the neck as we saw here so 2 choices, or the atacker die by the cut of his arm and chest and belly or CONTINUE

I agree that it looks wrong... And I practice the German Longsword. The most glaring part is at about 4:30 where they make the assumption that a guy ducking down and stabbing you in the throat won't get hit by the momentum of your swing. The technique looks rather similar to our schietalhau (although our technique is can be used to void all cuts below the neck) and even if we were hit, our strike would continue on into their head if they ducked like that. And that'd be true for all styles.

This is Osamu Obata Shihan (currently 7th dan) from the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Aikikai in Toronto, Canada. It is a very good aikido dojo. jcccaikikai.ca They are using fukuro shinai which is split bamboo covered in leather/suede. Often in practice they do use bokken, but the fukuro shinai and the tsuba (hand guard) allow for full speed training while still offering some protection.

It dosent matter, as lost as the dont get hit. And in real life (No that anyones still swings swords), you would be better off using the sharp end. Just my opinion.
@aiki98

not error .. must block with sharp side or back of sword, side will break. Since uke and nagi are concentrated on the edge . safer to blend with sharp side.

yes, if you block with the sharp side, or the Ha, of the katana then it dulls it. You have to block with the shinogi or the side of the katana.

Its so interesting. The techniques shown in this video differ so much from the style I train. So much so that they seem wrong. Overhead cuts using just forearms, no shoulders = no power. Counters to wrists that would not stop the momentum of the blade (4:10) Counters that seem designed to take on idiot opponents who fail to maintain distance. And these are techniques. Arms aren't fully extended to strike (I dont mean hyper-extended), and poor blade angle.. Maybe they are training softly.

Question, now I know nothing about this but from watching, if the defending guy blocks the attackers wrists with his sword like he appears to be doing, wouldnt the momentum of the attackers sword still swing around and hit the guy whos defending? I mean if you cut the attackers wrists the sword isnt just automatically going to stop right? Or something even like at 4:36 they wouldnt they both die since the guy being stabbed isnt just going to stop mid swing? Maybe I just dont understand.

@gottitgood4me There are no left handed swordsmen in Japanese sword styles but plenty of left handed techniques(and or two sword)at lower levels of training(i.e. 10 to 20 years)thats why the techniques are so effective-no one expects them as their mind has been set in concrete

@zeroellett When I trained Aikido I was told "There are no left handed swordsman" End of discussion. I never understood this. We do other techniques left and right handed. So I learned right handed during class and practice left handed out of class. Left handed is still more natural feeling for me.
