She was an OBO, which I believe was both oil and Ore.. Dont quote me on that. I seem to remember when I was doing my research into the ship, she was later converted to a bulker? It has been a while since I did the research much has happened to now. Hope that helps lol

Oops, I was misled by your initials DE which I took for the top level domain code of my country, and that you built a model of a bulker from the German shipping line Oldendorff (I was even tempted to ask you if you had sailed on HEDWIG OLDENDORFF, or how come you chose to build this very vessel?) which made me assume you were German too. So I try to put my above question in English (although Google Translate would probably have done a better job). The only thing that really scares me when it comes to building a ship model hull plank on frame from scratch is the part of sealing the wood properly to make it waterresistent and prevent the wood from "working" (viz. from warping - is this proper English, that wood works? That is the how we put it in German, _das Holz arbeitet_ ( _das unterscheidet es von Beamten_ - unlike civil servants - i.e. a common German joke). I have little to none experience in laminating works with GRP and resin, why I imagine it to be a rather difficult task especially draping the mat over regions of the hull with extreme curvature like the ship's ends of your bulker with its bulbous bow and stern without inadvertently creating pleats and blisters. Unfortunately this laminating process is only insinuated @01:12 for a fleeting 5 seconds. It would have been great to cover this in more detail.

How is the wood shaped to fit the hull? why is the foam necessary?
@demodelling3915

I cut the balsa wood strips to length and size, soaked the balsa wood strips in warm water for a few minutes. Then attached the damp wood to the hull with pins and clamps.. once the balsa dried the clamps and pins are taken off, and the balsa has dried to the shape of the Hull. It can then be glued to the frames

Its shaped by soaking the balsa wood for a few minutes then applying the balsa to the frame with pins.. once left to dry it stays the shape required and can glued back to the frames. Ive not used foam, but Id guess you mean the balsa infill at the bow.. the purpose of this is to carve the shape of the bow, as the balsa strips wont bend to the shape required for it. You'll notice in the slide show, I did make a mistake and sanded the balsa infill's to the frames (bulkheads) these had to be carved and cut out and new balsa block installed.. then sanded back to the width of the planking and shaped like the first. Hope that helps

@@demodelling3915 What a shame that you had to recarve the balsa lining blocks at stem and stern. Wouldn't it have sufficed to pad the void in the vicinity of e.g. frame 20 above the block with some putty and sand it down after curing to a fairing alignment with the waterlines around bulb and stem? Why did you glue the lining blocks at the ship's ends already in place prior to planking? I would imagine that it's a little easier to cut off the excess of the planks resp. plates at F.P., as well as at the first frame before the stern bulb, (here it doesn't coincide with the A.P. which is further aft at the rudder shaft's centre line) after the glue has hardened?

@@othernicksweretaken It was a lesson learnt, This is the first ship I have built, so kinda learning as I build. Was a silly mistake in hindsight, but have learnt from it.. I could have used putty, but thought id just start again so cut them out again started from fresh. Its been a fun learning curve during the build, taking it pretty slow as you can tell. Just hope I get to see it sail.. been put aside for a while until my newborn son is a little older :) cheers for the comment and feedback (y)
