What a genuinely lovely man as well as a genius lyricist and musician. So rare to have both.

I saw Prefab Sprout at the Oxford Apollo in 1985-part of the Two Wheels Good tour to promote Steve McQueen. Nearly 40 years of gigs later, it's still one of my favourites.

Paddy's songs need to make it to Broadway. Isn't there a writer out there who can draft a musical out of this material? The musician who was too clever for his own good?

33 years ago, I saw Prefab live at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre during The Comeback Tour and they were superb live. For me, their albums on vinyl are timeless and unique and one of the most creative bands of that era.

Paddy talked about meeting his hero Paul McCartney. I have six heroes: 1) Fred Couples; the golfer, 2) Steve Wozniak; inventor of the Apple Mac, 3) Keanu Reeves; the actor, 4) Francis Bacon; the artist, 5) Tom Campbell; the physicist, and 5) Paddy McAloon of whom I have been a fan since 1985. My secret wish was to one day meet all of them I met Francis Bacon in 1980 when I was an art student and that was one hell of an experience. I met Fred Couples in 1996 and I was so star struck I could hardly speak. I met Steve Wozniak in 2012 i n Oslo Norway and had a conversation about how robots could make the African deserts green again. The other three I still have hope only I have a feeling meeting Paddy would be almost impossible as he is such a private person.

The brilliant album "Swoon" was one of the soundtracks to my undergrad years in Manchester in the mid-80s. Working late into the night in a freezing cold terraced house in Rusholme, sitting in a sleeping bag at my desk and listening to it on cassette. "Her husband works at Jodrell Bank, gets home late in the morning" still sticks in my mind. Those harmonies and melodies felt strange but somehow accomplished to my ears. Thank you Paddy and the other Prefabs, I hope you're all prospering.

Listening to Prefab Sprout yesterday I was reminded how Swoon was one of my Xmas presents in 1986 as I was catching up with their music, having bought Steve McQueen earlier in the year. I know they were released in 1984 and 1985 respectively. Swoon was a revelation as it was quite different to Steve McQueen. Elegance is a great song, probably my favourite. It is the sort of album that gets under your skin and draws you in the more you listen to it, not unlike many others, of course! I really think they evolved their sound to hit the heights of perfection with the three albums that followed, especially Steve McQueen and From Langley Park To Memphis.

You nailed it. Swoon is the deepest for me and I don't think that is the case for many people.* The strange was the most interesting. When Bobby Fischer's plane (PLANE PLANE) touches the ground (PLANE PLANE). Paddy said he wanted to get away from the cleverness and that's fine, I love the others, but the capacity and the inclination to be eerie was a very special moment. * OK OK, Swoon and "Cars and Girls" and "Prisoner of the Past" and...

What a wonderful guy. I adore his work with the rest of Prefab Sprout. This was adult stuff and there's nothing like it now. It's shame, but by the same token, I feel priveledged to have heard it. Kid's have no idea how sophisticated pop music once was.
