Denis Hazlewood - Conceptual Ceramic Sculpture
ARTIST'S STATEMENTFor fifty years, I've sculpted narratives from clay-a journey that began with a potter's wheel gifted by my mother in 1970. Evolving from throwing to hand-building in 1974, I found my artistic niche in conceptual hand-built sculpture in 2009.
My creations are inspired by words and phrases, crafting whimsical stories in the language of clay. A career spanning 48 years in architecture and civil engineering has woven structural finesse into my work. Colored clays, unglazed, allow the raw material to speak for itself.
Mentors like Candace Birchfield, Dan and Carol Goodsell, and Jim and Mary Shorba have shaped my artistic trajectory. From Paradise to Willits, Kentfield to Sebastopol, their influence resonates in my conceptual explorations.
My sculptures embody the belief that all life is art, reflecting the joy of following creative passions. Each piece is an ode to the timeless connection between humanity and clay-a humble testament to our shared artistic journey.
