Now I'm afro caribbean, grew up surrounded by Christianity for basically my entire childhood. Heck we were forced (not given a choice if you parents stated you were christian) to say prayers before school. And when I hear smile, nothing about that comes across as remotely black nor gospel. The song, imo (feel free to disagree), is trash. Hot garbage. Dumpster juice. 10 year old refried beans removed from a whales bunghole, bad. The only song worse for me in Dawntrail is the 2nd raid boss'. I'm not sure why the voice actress is slanging the race card on this one. I know she's received a lot of slander for being the voice of a not so well like character and apparently her gender as well. So maybe all that negativity is getting to her.

I'll even argue that there's nothing that has to do with skin color with the song whatsoever, and categorizing it as such doesn't add any sort of value to the conversation around the song itself. It's just a song - a very weirdly mixed, pitched and performed song, used in weird spots in the MSQ where it arguably took more enjoyment away than it added.

@@SilverDragon1991 I get your point, but it's not just about skin color but it is about the culture of people which means a lot to people, which does influence music. If she wants to talk about Black peoples music, where those influences really come from needs to be talked about.

Smile is a generic happy song. The singer for this I believe is a JP-American woman who was in the Mormon Tabernacle choir. I think people hear a chorus and think "gospel/religious music" which shows their own lack of music literacy. It shows they don't try to listen to a large variety of genres or they don't interact closely with people who have different musical tastes that they may play in their presence. I kind of found the comment itself problematic since it makes an assumption about a genre of music and the people who listen to it.

Everytime I heard this song, I just turned on my own music at full blast until the cutscene ended. Also, has she never listened to songs like All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix? I'm a white guy but the moment I heard that song, I immediately fell in love with him as a musician. Best of all, it was the best part of Mafia 3 (a game that wasn't the best when compared to the previous two games). Whenever I think of music from African Americans, I think of music that's meant to empower the culture, like Jazz which first came about in the 1920s I believe. A song like Smile made me think "oh great, now we're going down the Disney route. Bend me over, Mr. Mouse." Not liking a song/genre/musician doesn't play into my beliefs. For example, I hate rap and hip-hop, not because I despise African Americans, but because I grew up with bands like Metallica. Even movies like Freddy Vs Jason had a theme from a band called Spineshank, a metal band, I believe. Since I was born in the early 2000s, I grew up on rock/metal music

I'm sorry. Sena is an idiot that needs to keep the mouth shut. There's enough baggage with this actor as it is already, with a weak voice acting performance and constant political soapboxing on social media. Smile is horrifically unfitting for both scenes it is presented in. Wordy as all get-out in comparison to something like Flow or Answers. Previous expansions would have its scenes directed such that the musical choices would almost always be perfect, like the lead writer would send notes to the composer to see if they could get a particular timing for the crescendo to work in harmony with the scenes. It was precise, like a surgical instrument. Smile blares in like a big, dumb hammer both times it plays. This voice acting strike may be the best thing to happen to Dawntrail as it will give us a very long break from listening to this person. Sena smacks of a nepotism hire because they're cut from the same cloth as Kate who is in charge of the English localization. Political soapbox, whining about representation on social media, etc. They're probably friends if I had to guess.

I am mixed race, Black and Asian and my Black side of the family are Baptist, so growing up, I remember sitting there during church listening to Choir Sing however, when I first heard "Smile", I thought why are they playing a "Gospel" type song in a Soth American setting? I was like, "Where is all the black people at in this game?" Jokingly. The song did not fit in with that setting especially when they played that song while building a VBIED. (Vehicle Born Improvised Explosive Device) Train that they used to blow up the front gate. I disagree with you and if you were in our shoes, I think most of the black community are sick and tired of being used for woke agendas. Take a look at Ubisoft’s controversy of Yosuke.

I want to always see a black actor portray spawn. Snow White (is white... Hell look at the damn know), so I want to see snow white played by someone white. It ain't snow brown. She's being toxic in the opposite way. She's deflecting fair criticism in a disgusting way. If you say you didn't like her voice acting, it must be transphobia, not that her performance was bad and contrasts very noticeably to other regions. If you don't like Smile, it can't be because it's weird and pitchy with the singer pronouncing the verses like Peter Griffin, it must be that we're racist against Black people, blissfully unaware that it's not Black music at all. She's already been extremely hypocritical calling out others for taking minority roles they aren't a part of while she's White and played the role of a character based on a person of Latin descent(which is also why the accent was weird). Sena Bryer absolutely has an agenda. I have nothing personal against her but this is a regular occurrence. The expansion is a South American and native North American themed expansion where the main city musical theme sounds like a mix of 20's swing and Dixieland in a city that looks like a Mayan metropolis. Then you get Smile played three times through the expansion. Once while building a giant bomb. The problem isn't the specific tracks themselves, it's the pacing and musical themes matching the setting being an absolute mess. I don't personally like Smile, it's just not my thing. To me it sounds like the third track that would play during the credits of a Disney movie. Also, it may just be my bad ears but almost all of the vocals are unintelligible.

Something that I didn't mention in this video, that others have mentioned online, which I agree with, is that the song is TOO WORDY. And this is a thing when it comes to a lot of Japanese composers writing for English. There's a lot of weird phrasing that doesn't really work with English because of using too many words. That was definitely the case in this song. I'm still at Storm Blood so I have a ways to go, but I did go to the Distant Worlds concert in NYC recently and saw a bunch of stuff during the FFXIV section that I was like "I'm sure this is a bunch of spoilers... I think one thing that people forget about when thinking of north American Indigenous music is the influence of the southeast tribes. Every time Indigenous of North America are represented, you almost never see representation of the eastern woodland nations. Part of the reason i like 14 so much is it tells a good story and brings up political issues without pushing an agenda. With this coming from one of the prominent voice actors for an expansion, im concerned that they might try to use the game as a platform to push their own political/social justice agenda all the while knowing nothing about the issues they're trying to bring up making themselves seem more ignorant than they were before.

The main issue with the song that I find is that it just doesn't fit with the moments in the game that they play it. They play the loud part of the song at 2 parts in the story and it doesn't fit at all and is extremely jarring and out of left field when it happens, and then we get the full version at the end credits which is technically the only "fitting" place to play it. Also, personally, I don't think the song fits with the game in general because that song is like you said, a theater song. That's something I'd expect to hear in like High School Musical or something made in a Disney movie, but not here.

Imo both times it played, it felt fitting to me. They felt like heroic "come together" moments in a story. And I don't mean just heroic as in saving the day, but overcoming an obstacle or being triumphant. During Wuk Lamat's speech to the people, it felt joyous and hopeful and celebratory. During the train construction, it felt hopeful and empowered the sense that these are communities and cultures coming together for a shared goal, bonding and befriending one another, not giving up despite the threat, pain, and impossibility of it all

@drbiohazmat Firstly, the train building scene in of itself was not needed. It just slowed the pacing of an already slow paced expansion even more. It would have been just as good if we faded to black and it was done and nothing would have been lost as a result. You COULD argue that it's fitting for the ceremony scene, but that song was way too overpowering over what was happening and being said that it took me out of it. A less auditorally invasive celebration song would have been just fine and more importantly, not jarring the second it starts playing. I hated the song.

Hey, Johahsahn, long time FFXIV player here (not only as a tax, as you jokingly mention). Being an european and living with no "sidewalk policy", I admit that the notion itself made me chuckle a bit, but I do understand why you mentioned it and why it was important in the discussion. It was honestly a good example of "being the better person" when someone is trying to instigate conflict. Something however you may not know about the song and why many didn't like it that much was the implementation of it in the game, where many people consider it "out of place". Now, I'm no musician, no singer and I'm literally your average consumer but I do understand that a weird implementation may change my appreciation of a certain music track. Shadowbringer is actually a good example where the implementation actually elevate the tracks in question (but you'll see that). Another thing you might not know about the Sena Bryer drama is that she voices a controversial character that is featured HEAVILY in the whole of Dawntrail and that her performance was judged by the majority of player as way below the expected performance, expecially since we can compare it with the french, german and japanese performances that were top notch (although watching a video about it would help you greatly on knowing more about this part... I won't suggest it or you might face big spoilers). I mention this whole thing because recently the moderators of Reddit made a post warning people that they would delete and ban everyone acting and making transphobic comments on Sena, but also warn people that they won't tolerate accusing other that they're transphobic only because they don't like her performance. Reddit being the shitty place that it is, I was actually quite pleased to see a similar post, expecially one that addresses both transphobic people and people pushing agendas and playing victim over something that is not connected in the slightest. ... Now, wouldn't be absolutely hilarious if the voice actor in question, a few days later, made the post that you so correctly commented in your video? Returning to the matter at hand, my exposure to black gospel was only through films and, even just with that, I can tell you that I don't know if I'm more baffled by her saying that Smile is black gospel or by her accusing half the community of being racist because someone might not like a music piece. Expecially considering she's a public figure and already part of a huge drama. All that being said, I'm 100% sure you will love both Shadowbringer and Endwalker to bits. And yeah, no big walk in Japan with crocks💀. PS: I envy your Team Rocket jacket a lot.

As I was reading I was like "wait, uh oh so is there hate against the voice actor in question... but why would she then use Black issues and issues of racism to paint a whole bunch of people..." and then your comment affirmed how EYE was feeling. Overall it's a weird move and I guess the ONE thing I was missing here, from an objective, fact based point of view, as someone who doesn't know this person... is that there seems to be no logical motivation to use Black culture and accusations of racism to push an agenda. Now if I understand you correctly, this person is the target of transphobic hate? Maybe they say her performance is bad and it's not actually THAT bad? One of my friends did send me a video that shows like, English, Japanese, French and German voice lines of a cat character eating spicy food??? @@jonahsahn I'm happy everyone else was also on board on not spoiling anything. <3 I can imagine it gets harder and harder avoiding spoiler everytime something new comes out. Hope you can avoid them all. Unfortunately however her performance was THAT bad. The fact is that the majority of people playing doesn't know she's trans, nor do they care. A voice is a voice for the average player and what matters is only your performance, not who you are. Hell, most people found out she was trans only because some started saying "if you don't like her, you're transphobic". In her defence, the whole english voice direction of Dawntrail was subject to heavy discussion and bad reviews, however her defence finishes there, since her whole role was so staggerly huge that no matter the bad voice direction, her performance was still poor at that point. What it was sent to you was a clip of the character in question, by the way, and to understand the importance of her role, you can imagine if the VA of Lyse was not on point during Stormblood. Now, were some of the critiques made by some trasphobic asshole? Absolutely. Were the majority of the critique made by them? Absolutely not. She also fails to realize that she's a public figure and she will always meet hate on the net. If she's trans, they will say something about it. If she's gay, they will say something about it. If she's chinese, they will say something about it. If he's a white cis male, they will say something about it. It's the unfortunate truth of the internet. Being a public figure also means that people look and judge everything you say and you cannot possibly paint with a wide brush the majority of the community. There was no logical reason to bring racism out if not for stirring trouble and play victim. It's the "I'm not wrong, it's them that say those things and think those things because they are transphobic, racist, x and probably a bit of y as well". She also attacked Bridget's voice actor in the past for playing the role while not a trans herself. She's that kind of person, unfortunately. The kind of person that thinks that the solution to hate is more hate and that cannot see that, if we truly want everyone to undestand that people are people, we need sometime to let that person walk on the wrong side of the sidewalk, while teaching kids to not do the same. Maybe you'll not change that idiot, but you can definitely educate other people at being better. ... Expecially if you're a public figure. Instead of being the better person and showing how it's done, she tries every sidewalk until she finds that one idiot going the wrong way, so she can push toward that direction and say "Look, that idiot tried to pass through me even though he was in the wrong". Ah, since they show you that clip, maybe you can ask your friends if they can make you listen to some supposedly screamed parts, without video of course and... without picking anything spoilerish. But I'm sure they'll do a good job with that. The community often feels BEYOND REPAIR but I'm out here trying to talk about things that we care about in gaming. It's crazy though because people who are negative about "woke" issues in gaming are SO active.

And something I forgot to mention: I'm so glad you've found a new choir. 🎉🎶🎵🎶💜💞

I looked them up (was now able to). By all means; that's an impressive choir! Unfortunately, I only found old performances(8-6y ago), so I couldn't play the game 'find Jonahtahn'. 🤪 I'm looking forward to new vid's. I see how singing together at such a high level must be rewarding and makes a community. Good luck with the program (season). 🤞🥰

@@v_nix check out their Elijah recording from last autumn. I was not in the group yet but I was in the audience of that concert and it made me decide to audition.

Hey Jonahtahn. So great to see you so soon again. As an absolute uninformed and inexperienced about everything concerning games, I did a quick search for the song and found it on (i guess a niche channel) 'Realthetical'. Anyhow, now I understand why you brought up the story about the sidewalk. You're right. The song isn't gospel at all. The claim is throwing spaghetti to the wall in hope it sticks. I hope the discussion will die out soon. It's a matter of taste if you like it or not. Idk what to think about it, i'm just glad it brought you back here. 😉 Heatwave is over. And you made my day. Love from my little corner. 💜💞

@jonahsahn I'll always keep the notifications on. You've done so much for me. I'm now 5y past exp date, and while it's slowly even getting worse, days like today keep me going. (I think). Even if it's physically hard. And some days are better - or/and I can just write more bc there was nothing else interfering today. Love and big hug. 💜💞
