For me I always valued hand made things before getting into crochet I was already doing embroidery and growing up I was influenced by the diy mouvement but I decided to try crochet bc of the harry styles cardigan since i couldn't find it anywhere for me crochet is a great way to use fashion to express myself and my ideas and a great way to keep my mind focused

Crochet also provides instant gratification. On days where work or social life don’t provide a sense of accomplishment, seeing that my project grew an inch makes me feel more productive.

It was fun learning the history of crochet! I do it every day and never thought to look into it. Thank you <3 It weirdly energizes me. Sometimes, I stay up until 3 am crocheting away and being excited about a piece 😅

This isn’t even the beginning. This is a preview of what’s to come. So much great pop music out and will come in years. In America I’m so glad we’re not being forced to listen to lil baby and future anymore lol. I’m a lifelong fan of nearly all music.

To be honest, my grandma showed me how to crochet and knit. That was last year. I didn't have a reason. I was just bored.😂 Thisis summer I knitted my first pair of socks( with her help ofc). I just do it for myself and family but I find this topic very intersting and understand the struggle from people who wanna sell their stuff.

i'm a gen z and i started crocheting when i was 13/14 (in the pandemic) not because of it being popular but because i could vividly remember my grandparents crocheting and i felt like learning how to crochet would make them proud, even if they could never actually know ❤🩹

Tbh, I'm not so great at predicting trends - never have been - but I sure do hope this one doesn't vanish super quickly. I heard I Love It and that song voiced how I felt about it, and I've loved electropop ever since. I want Brat Summer to last forever. It's also exactly my favorite kind of dance music - the kind with lyrics that I can sing and join in on. This is better than the 2008ish music in that respect.

Fascinating! One thing I think does get left out of many crochet videos is that there tends to be a swing back and forth between various crafts, particularly knitting and crochet, in terms of which is the trendy, finding yourself, joining DIY culture one this decade. Perhaps it's more crochet and knitting right now precisely because knitting was so big in the early 00s. Who knows.

And not to be a downer, but... part of crochet's surging popularity on tiktok is that it is FAST and can be done at a pace that fits an influencer's upload schedule. Knitting has suffered similarly, with chunky sweaters that look like garbage in a week and that are often uncomfortable to wear being much more of a trend than the knits you'd actually want for your wardrobe long term. It's the appearance of slow fashion with the reality of disposable social media hype. Yeah, individual creators are living up to their sustainability ideals, but the trend overall isn't as positive, and it's not just because of huge fast fashion companies.

I think a part of why crochet became so popular during the pandemic, aside from people having time (and sometimes no money), is the meditative aspect. Meditation is good for the mental health; combine that with the positive brain chemicals you get from having made something - accomplishment, pride, compliments from friends - it may be a legitimate means of self-medicating at least somewhat against covid anxiety, uselessness depression, and lets you focus on something that's productive so you're not thinking about the world being on fire.

another point to mention is this pipeline is only open to thin bodies! emma, moya and bestdressed ashley are all the same size, probably around a US size 2. all i can think when i see them in miu miu and dior that's been gifted to them to wear to shows or events is of course they picked you, you fit into their sample sizes! they don't invite big girls to these things!

I learned how to crochet in the 90’s, when I was 16. I’ve made hundreds of items over the years, mostly blankets. The new thing I started doing during the pandemic was to make my own yarn. I first learned how to use a drop spindle then quickly graduated to a spinning wheel. I LOVE being able to create my own blends and colors and turn that into clothing. I also make dolls, jewelry and mixed media art with the yarn I create.

Crochet has become my favorite art form over the past 1.5 years. It's empowering to be able to make items and clothing by hand. I'll need something, and instead of buying it, I make it myself. The more things I make by hand for useful purposes or art, the more I become confident in myself and my abilities. I love it!!

I got into crochet literally just before it became a trend. A nurse at my school taught me, and I was really excited when all these new crochet tutorials started coming out a year later. Me and some of my friends were able to get a crochet club in school. Instead of “what are you a grandma?” It was “woah, you can crochet??” I thank the trend for that.

Loved hearing your commentary on this! I’m curious about the ongoing nightlife industry - as Gen Z gets older and wants more irl experiences, I wonder if they’ll figure out how to safely party or let loose in public, or if we’ll see night life start to really be a difference in generations, where Millennials and older generations go to bars and clubs, and Gen Z really don’t. Much of Gen Z are only just entering “adulthood” post high school or college, and it’ll be interesting seeing Gen Z get to their mid/late 20s and 30s, and what they choose to do for fun

This video reminded me of that Charli XCX interview that was "All you really need is a white tank top, a cigarette" and etc." Something like that. The music is so fun, but you don't need to be elaborate (finically) for an album like BRAT. And I think Chappell Roan is amazing to most people because of how much she has worked for it due to many finical reasons. Having to make most of her first costumes by hand in live, having to raise all the money at the start with "normal" jobs and etc. But this video was incredible! Recession pop is so back 😅

I learned to crochet in 2nd, maybe 3rd grade, from the librarian at my elementary school. I would spend recess in the library, and she would show me how to make chain stitches with my fingers. Mom saw me develop an interest in the craft, and bought a book on how to make amigurumi (I have the book to this day, and it honestly still has my favorite amigurumi designs). We both learned how to crochet together in the afternoons when I came home from school. I lost interest in it in around 6th or 7th grade. I was developing new hobbies (mainly digital art) and could not stay focused on an amigurumi project for long enough to finish it. About last year or so however I found one of the old plushies I made and wondered why I had stopped. Well, it turns out I had undiagnosed adhd all throughout my childhood, and years of crocheting the same things just stopped being appealing to my wonderful, but very frustrating brain. Things aren't the same as back then however. I have websites like Ravelry and KZitem to look up so many amazing patterns with lots of different stitches and colors that keep me stimulated and focused throughout the whole project. People are publishing so many unique designs online for free! I've even learned how to crochet clothing now. Perhaps the most fun part is, when I picked up crochet again, so did my mom. And then also my grandma, who I found out had been crocheting intricate dresses for my mother when she was young. That's three generations all practicing the same craft together! I love how much more accessible crochet is nowadays.

capitalism (neoliberalism) creates a state of political and economic precarity by pitting people against each other to create chaos through wars, genocide, conflict, climate catastrophe, then it can easily exploit workers because they're vulnerable. the aspiring classes have a precarious self identity which is based on their social status making them insecure of their wealth. the more luxury brands create wealth by both mass manufacturing unsustainably and then burning their stock to maintain an economic and cultural identity, the more mass production has to speed up and cut corners meaning more exploitation and cruelty to meet the artificial demand that wealth creates, and more need for workers they can exploit, thus driving down wages and living conditions. wealth is an illusion that maintains its own identity by manufacturing scarcity. it portends to be security whilst creating chaos. there is no difference between mass produced and luxury items ethically because each one feeds the other,. luxury fashion can never be ethical because it keeps the poor, poor and the rich rich economically through production and culturally through creating the illusion of wealth

idk about you guys but i never found emma chamberlain to be relatable. she was a rich kid who grew up in san fransisco…one of the most expensive cities in the USA. she never mentioned ever working a real job or anything of the sort. that screams unrelateable to me. she’s only ever worked for herself because she has the immense privilege of wealth. she’s never had to work customer service or in the food industry because she is filthy rich. she’s a nice gal but we can all admit she had a lot of stuff just handed to her and is incredibly out of touch with what life is like for a lot of young people nowadays. personally, i know very few people who have never worked a job yet still find ways to complain about their life. just because she can do a ken burns doesn’t mean she understands the struggles of the working class lmao
