Last year we tried to make camp at Inyo mine and didn't know we setup on top of a underground bee hive until they started to swarm all of our equipment. Breaking camp that moment made for interesting story to tell for ages.

Hoped to see more of your adventures. However, looks like they ended after this trip. My first drive over Titus Canyon Road seemed a bit more intimidating few weeks ago (4 Oct 2018). One hairpin turn got my heart racing when my front end slipped an inch or two toward road's edge with a sky only view from the driver's seat. Overnight torrential rain eliminated dust, but added some slippery mud, here 'n' there.

Reasons like these, I sometimes think about buying a cheap eBay rear-view camera, and mount it at the front bumper on my Tacoma. I may do it early next spring.
@amateurexpeditions3927
7 жыл бұрын
I hear you. I did a test run using a GoPro and my phone and the results were disappointing. With the mostly straight down view the rocks don't have much depth and the angle to the path of the tires is so extreme that it's hard to tell where they are going. That said, it would be nice even for parking to see what's beyond that massive hood. You don't really want a rear view camera because the image will be reversed. I'm working on a setup similar to what you describe. However, I'm going to try this camera www.amazon.com/iNewcow-Embeded-Camera-Toyota-Waterproof/dp/B00P2EN5J2/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 and this adapter/harness www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014UOXUG2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 so I can display the image on the head unit. We'll see how it works and then I'll see if I can come up with something better if needed.

@amateurexpeditions3927

On this trip the the truck is stock other than the SnugTop and things like seat covers. No lift and the tires and wheels are  what came stock on the TRD Off-road. If your 2015 is a 4x4 and you have a little experience, you would have no problems with any of the places we went. Even if your truck was 2wd you should be able to do Inyo Mine and Titus canyon (and many other places). Just don't go alone, go prepared, and check road conditions before you go. (And maybe NOT go in Summer?)

It's a great truck and really capable off-road for a stock vehicle. I don't think it's for everyone, but if you value reliability and want to do significant off-roading, I think it's a great choice. My biggest complaint was the way the transmission shifted, but once the dealer loaded the software update it has been so much better. The details would take pages to describe, but it is doing exactly what I wanted and exceeding my expectations in many areas. I need to do a video on CRAWL Control, I really expected that to be a gimmick, but it has actually been far more useful than I expected under certain conditions (specifically going DOWN steep inclines and digging itself out of sand).

Check out this thread on TacomaWorld.com with over 21k posts about meet-ups in Orange County. www.tacomaworld.com/threads/orange-county-meetups.217178/ With a 4 year old, I'd be cautious and prepared when you go out in the backcountry. Make sure there is something fun for them, otherwise it's just a bumpy car trip. We did some really basic back-roads when the kids were smaller and they still talk about it. It doesn't have to be much to be a big event for them. Good Luck!

Nicely made videos - Cannot wait for Day 3. These roads so far - would that be passable with Subaru?
@amateurexpeditions3927
8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Pan Thanks! As for the Subaru, I'm not familiar with the details of the product line (though, I like the company and cars), so I'm assuming we are talking about those with better than average ground clearance like the Forester or the Outback. My biggest concern would be the street oriented tires with short sidewalls. Echo Canyon up to Inyo Mine (Day 1) would have been fine if you go at a reasonable speed. Titus Canyon would be doable but it's a long road and you'd want to take it easy. I would bring a full size spare and travel with at least one other vehicle, but there was nothing that should stop you. A friend of mine took his WRX on Titus Canyon and cracked a rim and had to pump it up several times to make it out (only had space-saver spare). He said he was "flying" so that's probably a big part of the problem. I personally wouldn't hesitate to take a Forester or Outback on Titus Canyon or Echo Canyon, but I would feel a lot better if I had a full size spare and a buddy vehicle for Titus Canyon. Chloride City/Cliffs might be possible but at a very large risk of body or tire damage, I would not do it. Day 3 will show the Reward Mine, the Alabama Hills, and Burrow Schmidt Tunnel. All would be very doable in a high-clearance Subaru except the last stretch of the road up to the Reward mine would be too risky (you can see the Xterra working through the worst of it in the outro montage). However, I would think you could get close enough to walk the rest of the way. That said, I have a lot of respect for the capability of the Subaru AWD system and folks do amazing things with them. You just have to balance the risk. Disclaimer: Just because I think I could do it, doesn't mean you can or should, it's just my opinion.

+Amateur Expeditions thanks for the reply. BTW Toyota TRD is on my wishlist too. I probably will go for 4 runner TRD bc of practicality but I have to say I like the look of Tacoma more over 4 runner. I traveled over the West some 15 years ago , and visited many NPs but at that time we did not have any off road capable car.
@amateurexpeditions3927
8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Pan I like the 4Runner also, and there are times when I'm lamenting the dust intrusion in the back (even with a shell) and I think I should have bought a 4Runner. For me, the Tacoma was a better fit to what I wanted to be able to do with the vehicle and it was cheaper.
@amateurexpeditions3927
8 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Pan I found a very short video of a Subaru going through one section of the road to Chloride City. kzitem.info/news/bejne/yaF9yGqio6iLdoI It made it through, but it took some work. Also note how close the rocker panel is coming to the rocks. This was just one rough section, there were probably a dozen or so of similar difficulty. So maybe you could do it, but it would take some skill. In contrast, the Tacoma and the Xterra, both on 31" stock tires, just bumped through this stuff without too much trouble.However, I do think you could go most of the interesting places in Death Valley in a properly prepared Subaru; this road is just one of the few cases where I would be unsure.

I see that it's a snugtop but which model? Also I have been doing research on the snugtop rebel, XV and outback. I've been quoted 2500 for the rebel, 2900 for the XV and 3800 for the outback are those high prices?
@amateurexpeditions3927
8 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Grant This is a very optioned Rebel. The Xtra-Vision is less interesting if you get windoors since they are the same size on the Rebel and the XV. The XV does have better rear hatch locking hardware, but it wasn't worth the ~$500 difference to me. I did not shop the Outback since I like having a tailgate and I didn't want to lose the backup camera. You definitely want to shop around, there was a difference of over $500 between the highest and lowest quotes I received. That said, using a local dealer is ideal so you don't have to go so far if you have a problem.
@jeffreygrant9633
8 жыл бұрын
+Amateur Expeditions Thank you so much for this response it helped out a lot. I also have a 2016 tacoma and the rear view camera is big for me as well so I probably won't go that route. But between the rebel and the XV it's a toss up because I like the bigger video. I also have a long bed so it might be a bigger difference for my truck then yours since it looks like you have the short bed. How are the blind spots with the camper shell?
@jeffreygrant9633
8 жыл бұрын
+Amateur Expeditions I have a longer bed*
@amateurexpeditions3927
8 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Grant If I were not going to get windoors, I would absolutely go for the XV for the improved visibility and better latch and lock hardware. In fact, that's what I did many years ago when I got a XV for my first-gen Tacoma. From what I understand, the XV and Rebel are made in the same mold. The XV gets larger windows installed, some standard features, and a few upgrades (the only one of note to me was the latching hardware). However, if you get the windoors, they end up with the same size side windows (the same windoors are not only used for multiple SnugTop models, but also for other brands), so the only benefit would be the improved latch hardware (the Rebel hardware works fine, it's just clearly lower grade. Also of note is I have the upgraded lock set to work with the power locks). If there is a difference in the size of the front window, it wasn't obvious to me. Though, I did get the fold down front window and the additional frame may be the reason.As for blind spots, there's definitely a drop in visibility with my setup. If you think about it, you are looking through 3 pieces of potentially dirty glass. Instead of just the back window of the cab, you are looking through the back window, the front window of the shell and the side or back window of the shell. Also, since the sides and back windows are tinted, your view is darker. I never have to use the dimmer on the rearview mirror. The side mirrors are pretty good on the Tacoma and I can still see enough out of the back window to have good situational awareness. My truck has the blind-spot-monitoring system, so that also improves awareness (though, if your mirrors are adjusted right it's rarely strictly necessary). I did a write-up about my shell on TacomaWorld. You can check it out if you want some more details. There's a ton of info on the site, so you should join if you haven't already.www.tacomaworld.com/threads/camper-shells-available-for-3rd-gens.395885/page-3#post-11358068
