I set it up the same way but im using a 3000 watt pure sinewave inverter from my car. I modified a heavy duty electrical cord and put a dryer plug on the other end. My panel is in my garage. I have a 240v EV outlet in the garage and it uses the same plug as thr dryer. It seems to work fine.

I have a 7000 though and I have seen electricians run peoples central air with it, probably a two ton unit! I wouldn't thought that possible until I seen it. I'm gonna get a dryer plug and do this. One advantage for me is the dryer puts the generator farther away from my bedroom and den.

WOW, the fact his last name is nightfire may sadly be appropriate , UGH! All kidding aside as a lifelong licensed electrical professional I see no safeguards, no regard to understand and use NEC Electrical Code or local codes, no effort to use UL Listed products designed for this application and therefore way too many variables, and so much room for error. Best to hire a licensed and insured electrician that’s dedicated to the craft, to carefully select then connect limited “essential” home circuits based on generator capacity and keeping power quality top of mind (not based on folks wants) via a 4 to 10 circuit GenTran type transfer device and exterior power inlet after a doing a proper NEC load calc, getting an electrical permit and inspection approval so it will be seen as approved work in legal and insurance terms. Insurance companies are considered an AHJ and have no reservations about voiding a claim and doing a forensic inspection getting date codes on wiring, etc… Not good to have a fire, an electrocution or let the smoke out of your vfd furnace motor speed controller, tv or refrigerator either, sure pisses the wife off. Best to maintain insurability of a home and protect life / property of all involved before and after the power meter. Hope this helps just one person, and this irresponsible video is removed ASAP… My 2 cents…

Why not just buy a second 30 amp breaker and permanently wire the black and the red wire from dryer cord into it, strip back the jacket, and wire the neutral and ground leads into their appropriate ground bars? (Or the same ground bar) (2 screws) Shut off the main box breaker so it won't back feed to the street, and just swap out the new cord and breaker. Now you have access to ALL your circuits on both bar sides. Leave the dryer wall outlet completely out of the equation. Go straight from the generator to the new 30 amp breaker. It's WAY more safer and it's not a suicide cord anymore. Pretty obvious and the only cost is for a new breaker and the extension cable. And, you can't accidently get killed.

Why not connect both the red and the black together in your 3 prong plug? It'll feed both sides of the panel. 240v items wont work, nor would they be harmed because there is 0v potential between the 2 hots

Im trying to figure out what you mean by this. If say the generator is 240v 30 amp and you make cord going from generator, to a 3 pong plug to dryer, it will technically power both sides of the bus bar? Just buy a generator cable, 240/120 30A, cut off the female end and strip the wires back. Go to your breaker box and kill the main switch. Remove the hot wires from the dryer breaker and wire in the 2 hot wires from the generator. Wire in the neutral and ground. Turn off all the other breakers and start the generator. Turn on dryer breaker and decide which other breakers you need on within the limits.

Several people have mentioned transfer switches and generlink kits on here. I've since updated to a full inverter/battery system, but if you want a safe and inexpensive way to use a generator, go with an interlock kit. The switch costs about $25 (check your panel model) and maybe $100 for the new breaker, wiring, and inlet. Then $100 for an inspection and you are set. Simply turn back on the breakers that you think your generator can support and you are good to go.

@shaunnightfire8269
Жыл бұрын
Ah so you have the older style 3 prong dryer. Full disclosure, I am not an electrician as I've stated before so definitely get a 2nd opinion. If you want to use the dryer plugs 30a, wire one hot and the neutral to your suicide cord while leaving the other hot shunted off. That means you still need to find a way to ground. Since your panel is already bonded, you could possibly run a separate ground only suicide cable to the generator using a standard outlet to one of the 20a outlets on the generator. Generally, the ground does not need to be as thick as the hot or neutral. That said, it might just be easier to just use a standard 20a outlet. Also make sure you properly ground your generator with a rod and grounding cable.

This is dangerous, LETHAL, and ILLEGAL in all 50 states. There two fatal errors here: 1) This cord, in essence, a suicide cord. When the cord is plugged into the generator end, the exposed prongs at the "dryer outlet" end are live with LETHAL voltages (240VAC), which is WHY the NEC and every municipality in the US and Canada forbid this; and, 2) Without the proper interlock kit in the main panel, if you (or someone unfamiliar with your setup) forget(s) to turn off the main breaker first, you will: a) Back-feed out onto the main powerlines; and b) run the risk of killing/injuring a linesman working to restore power in your area. Those nice transformers that step down the high voltage to the 120/240 split-phase that all homes use, will also step up any 120/240VAC back to the 13,200 (13.2kV) onto the high-voltage lines. It's pretty easy to connect the dots from there. If you want to do this right, either have a licensed electrician do this for you, or if you're going to DIY it, get the proper materials. Installing a generator INLET is much easier than we've all been led to believe. Inlet, wiring, breakers, and interlick kit. Pretty simple, safe, and LEGAL.
