I just wish the second half of this movie kept the eerie atmosphere of the first half. I thought it got super dull after the girls returned to the school.

I saw it for the first time in 1978 or 1979. I can't remember the exact Year. I was 10 Years old. After watching it once, this movie never went out of my mind again. Even as a 10 Year old I understood the genius behind it. Later on I understood more of the historical circumstances, the end of the Victorian Era. The World was changing. Extremely technical progress everywhere, Electricity, Industrial revolution grew to unimagined size. The old world with old values and old moral views disappeared. It's hard to explain, for me it seems, that this time had an slower life rythm, everything covered by a veil of strong moral views, and a unexplainble form of sadness.Almost, as if the whole British Empire would mourne with her Queen. As if the whole Empire was dreaming, and this dream was over now. There were two historical events later, that ended this era completely, the sinking of the Titanic, and WW1. After that, the World had changed completely and the Victorian Era was forgotten. But strangely, this time has a special beauty that is extremely fascinating. And this movie captures the mood of this time perfectly. It's a gem.

The answer to the mystery is in the opening scene, where Miranda says that "we are in a dream within a dream" citing a famous poem. Therefore when they vanish, they are simply exiting the matrix and illusion of this world, which is a dream according to many spiritual traditions. I can't believe none of you noticed that except me. If you are a spiritual truth seeker, you are more likely to see these kind of things.
