This was so ahead of it's time. Like magic. People don't realize this but doing the same with C / Win32 would require you to write a lot of boilerplate code, dealing with those WM_XXX messages. Here it's as simple as it gets : dropping a button on a form and double clicking on it. Of course VB has it's own limitations but for most simple use cases will fit perfectly. Add the ability to bind those forms to a database and you get a killer product. MS Access will take care of that.

Nothing before or after VB has matched its developer experience. Programming with it was a pleasure like on no other language/platform.

Alan Cooper was the father of Visual Basic, and it was cool as hell. But I think the most revolutionary thing about Visual Basic was the VBX extension mechanism, and rumor has it that was Bill's idea. I'd bet money that the value created by the "network effect" was on his mind at the time because that's how DOS made him rich. I truly loved VB, and VBXs. I made enough money writing VBXs to put a down payment on a house. Thanks Bill and Alan!

That's awesome, I bought VBXs because I wasn't a full time coder and needed to get stuff done, It was a great system.

For all folk that say VB is a toy language, if you've gone to a bank, a receptionist in a hotel, an airport, and a million other scenarios chances are the application servicing that request was a VB application.

I learned BASIC in DOS around 1993 in sixth grade. Then my high school didn't have any code classes, so I didn't touch code again until I was 36 in 2017, and now I'm a .NET software engineer. Crazy how it works out sometimes.

I used VB in 96 when I started my Computer Studies degree. It was a revelation at the time coming from BASIC on the Spectrum and Amstrad. I've moved on to C# now but the basic design is still there with Visual Studio now.
