Unfortunately I didn't get the genuine experience. I watched Evil Dead 2 first when I was around 13 (after it had been out for some time pre Army of Darkness) then Evil Dead 1. Evil Dead 2 was sillier although aware of itself, (but not hyper aware of itself if that makes any sense), so Evil dead 1 never struck me as horrifying as a result.

On a side note I totally regretted not renting Evil Dead 2 sooner than I did, once I finally rented it. I looked over that movie for years before I rented it. In hind sight I could have sworn it was a pg-13 movie, because that was a partial diversion for me (unless it was perhaps the 1st one and the NC17 rating for whatever reason made me think it was less for whatever reason?). You look at the box and I remember it almost looking like a bunch of filmstrips of Ash with cuts and blood and then it saying what a gore fest it was on the box, but then I was like than how is it pg13. The box wasn't compelling and it seemed like a dud and that's all I had to go on in those days... I wasn't tapped into a group where I caught hearsay as to what was and wasn't good and I had been watching horror movies since I was 5 and all movies for that matter, but as a young kid there was something extra cool about horror movies.

I have to disagree with the big Q on the fact that it was my mom that rented the evil dead from the video store and we fell in love and then the 2nd one came out and it was better than heroin. My mom has great taste in movies. The 1st version sam raimi did is on youtube i think ,but i thought it was shot too dark and i dont even know if it was called evil dead tho it had bruce cambell and the same premise pretty much. Mr. Cambell looked like he was 16 in that one

Why does Quentin assume only women (mother, aunt, some girl you know) would hate Evil Dead?? I'm a woman who loves them, and I'm certain i'm not the only one. Kind of annoying when men pull that shit.

My family just watched army of darkness, and I really enjoyed it, not as horror as the others but it was a fun movie, and I love Bruce Campbell. The slapstick horror is great.

Hard to not love Tarintino's passion for film. He truly was one of those people that grew up loving the medium, got a job at a video rental store and lived eat and breathed it before making the jump to being in the business himself.

3:16 Tarantino put a shot like that in *Kill Bill* . When Beatrix flies to Japan it is very obviously a model airplane against a matte painting ... and I love that shot. Now I know what gave the inspiration.

people who saw adult-intended movies early on, at the age of 10-12ish, they're the ones who fall in love with film. The first movies I saw when I was around 10 was Dirty Harry, Evil Dead, Taxi Driver etc. They were Real, at that age movies were strangely real and I loved it. it was almost like a supressed memory that I was there and lived the scenes. Today at the age of 50 Im still a huge movie buff, everyday since I got my first vhs player in the late 80s I've seen 3-4 movies a day. Its a passion.

I like Evil Dead 1. Evil Dead 2 is the one everyone likes because it's comedic and doesn't take itself seriously. I prefer Evil Dead 1 BECAUSE it takes itself somewhat seriously, despite its complete and utter pulpiness. It is unapologetically pulpy and gratuitous and doesn't hamstring itself by making itself comedic, which is something I don't think a lot of people understand. Evil Dead 1 released as an NC-17 movie. Not an R. Evil Dead 2 released as an R, and didn't have any of the trouble associated with it like Evil Dead did, because it was a comedy.

Tarantino would use those weird camera shots from Evil Dead 2 in The Hateful Eight.
