Just finished watching Ripley, for the 2nd time. This is one of the (many) knockout scenes. Takes your breath away, spine tingling and even though I didn't understand a word, my reaction was (and still is) the same as Tom Ripley's. Welling up.......utterly beautiful setting, song and singer!

Eliot Sumner is so perfect as Freddie, just the right mix of softness and protection, both inviting and wary. Freddie know immediately that there's something up with ... "Ripley" ... "Ripley" ... and then the not-so-subtle signal to Dickie. Hildegard de Stefano's impeccable outfit, spectacular hair and spotless physical rendition are just mesmerizing. A short cover, less that 2 minutes, but spot on. Enjoy.

Heard about. Intrigued now. Haven't seen a big one since True Detective. This the 13th adaptation of a Highsmith novel. It feels commensurate with this very troubled period. Purple Noon was Alain Delon's big break through in the role of Ripley in 1960. Dreams of life what ifs.....

Ripley is a despicable person but when moved by an Italian song he becomes human, just like us. A narrative note of an absolutely brilliant subtlety and of extreme importance for the character-audience relationship.

Did you notice though, that only Tom’s LEFT eye teared up at the end of the song? His right eye stayed dry. Psychopaths have very differently wired brains than ours. Parts of their brains are literally shrunken and the empathy centers are weak to non-existent. I wonder if anyone else caught this about Tom’s left eye tearing. I studied psychopathy and psychopaths once several years ago and it is an interesting topic! Scary as hell, though.

Such a weird 2024 conceit to pop a woman in the role of Freddy and expect the characters to act like she's a man and for viewers to also pretend that she's a man. What a bizarre, anachronistic thing to do to an otherwise excellent production. Completely blew the suspension of disbelief.

Talented Mr Ripley with Damon and Law is a great film and one of my all-time favourites, so I was excited about this adaptation and how they will tell Ripley's story again but with a new look and new perspective on the character. I think Andrew Scott was phenomenal as Ripley, a cold, merciless, and conniving con man/killer who clearly was chasing a lavish lifestyle through other people in means to get a satisfaction that he believes he deserves. But what makes this performance stand out to me more than Damon's, even tho I love Damon's portrayal as well, is that this Ripley is completely cold, he is not needy or begs for attention or approval. He is just a bad guy. Some may say a narcisstic sociopath or psychopath. He barely showed any emotion whatosver to the people he hurt or killed, the only thing he cares about is making sure he is in a good place and anything else does not matter unless he is feeling great, other people are just toys in means to get what he wants. But he also appreciates art and life in his own way, but the sad part is that in reality, he is a loner, a runner and seems like he never was truly loved for who he is as a person I mean I could go on and on but I hope you understand what I am trying to say. Oh, and also, he is definitely less charismatic than Damon's version. With Damon's portrayal, he was oozing charisma in this one. Ripley is just a creepy, calculated manipulator with a look of a complete Psycho. Either way, I appreciate both performances and like both of them in they own ways, I think the Damon's movie version is more of a entertaining film but this one is definitely more for film buffs and people who appreciate authenticity, amazing acting, masterful cinematography, outstanding sets and great writing. Also, this one feels like straight out of the book, I imagine reading one of those books and imagining these scenes playing in my head while I am reading one of these pages, this even feels like a book but I can see how this series won't be for everybody and that's understandable. It's a very neo-noir/psychological while the movie was more of a fun thriller. Don't get me wrong the movie was still very well made, but it was definitely more colourful in it's approach and more for mainstream audiences than the show Ripley, I can see some people absolutely be bored by this but I really enjoyed it overall. Would give it a solid 8/10.

I just learned a peculiar detail that changes the reading of the scene. The original song was composed by Gino Paoli about an encounter with a prostitute. I don't refute that you can have a meaningful time when you pay for sex, but it strikes me interesting it could be seen as a comment on how Ripley is basically imagining himself as someone who has emotions in this scene just as he is imagining Dickie wants him the same way, just as a paid sex encounter is an imagined love making - the partner is not doing it out of emotion or lust but to make a living. And for Ripley meeting people is also just a transaction, as he is unable to see other people as anything other than means to his goals and little else. So Ripley is in essence both the sex worker's customer and the sex worker here.

What a show. The way ripley slowly falls in love with Italy while jumping from place to place to avoid being caught. I wasn’t sure on the black and white at first but after 10 minutes I understood why they did it. Even when you strip away the sun and the colourful buildings the amazing architecture is on show. I liked how the shots would linger on the architecture for a few a bit longer than usual. We just like ripley fall in love with Italy with him.

The Sky in the Room (English) When you are here with me this room has no more walls but trees infinite trees. When you are here near me this purple ceiling, no, it doesn’t exist anymore. I see the sky above us. We stay here abandoned as though there were nothing, nothing left in the world. A harmonica is playing. To me it seems like an organ that vibrates for you and for me up in the immensity of the sky. For you, for me: in the sky.
