I remember Ron Ellis mention just a light, quick wax dip for his Ellisonics. He also mentioned how with 8s, round wound pushed into distortion, that they’ll do everything by EVH and Page, could do, but better (it takes an incredibly light touch) .

Thanks for this comp, you’re doing a great service to the Jazzmaster lover community. Surprised at how much I like the Duncans in this. They pretty much do everything I like/expect out of a Jazzmaster: sparkly and "hi-fi"-esque top end with deep and lush bottom end, with that woody, warm midrange that I like a lot (sorry for all the buzzwords, yikes) Surprised to hear your thoughts at the end. Super interesting, kudos

Nickel wound. In the video I had NYXL’s and my 12’s are GHS Boomers. They’re fairly close in the neck, but I feel the Fred is a little bolder, a little more top end sparkle and bottom end punch. The woody+ bridge is really different-I feel like that was a really warm, mid heavy pickup. Much more classic chime in the Fred bridge, a little lower output but still balances well, and still warmer than Duncans or Righteous Sounds (or any other traditional repro). Main goal was to get some of that classic JM chime back I felt the woody/woody+ lost, and the Freds do a great job.

Very nice demo. Looks like Josh put the Spatarmonds on the website a couple of days ago, with potted and unpotted choices. I have been looking for clear p90 mount pickups to put in my 30” baritone tuned low E like a bass vi. I’m thinking of the Spatarmonds, or the Lollar staple p90s if I want to save a bit of money (they’re supposed to sound like dynasonics). Tough choices. For example, I’m not sure of going unpotted is worth it for a bit more top end clarity vs microphonic issues-it’s not like I can try them both! :). Anyway, thanks for the demo and your impressions!

I’m debating getting Lollar Regals (low-wind in neck) or Firebirds in a Jazzmaster and wanted to know what you’d think of what potential differences those would have. Also scared of what the Firebird installation would require (I replied to another comment on this post with layman terms). Awesome video. This was so much fun to watch.
@nicknihil5882

I would figure the Lollar Regal Low Winds would sound closest to the Mercury I's, though probably not THAT similar. I've honestly never played wide ranger pickups. Jazzmaster routing is wide enough for humbuckers but not necessarily deep enough. You can use short pole screws which will get your pickups about flush with the cover. Wide range in proper size would need additional routing. The Firebirds came in the mounting ring (they can customize that for you, apparently), but they're still a smidge deeper than JM pickups and you have less range to raise/lower. But my guitar is routed for standard JM depth, I haven't modified the body for anything else.

@nicknihil5882
10 ай бұрын
There’s a pretty wide variation on P90s so this may not be 100% applicable, but vintage style JMs tend to have lower output with clearer, tighter attack. They’re also a little more compressed and the dynamics are a little less spiky. Tighter low end, chimier, cleaner, more present midrange. The Sunday Handwounds are more balanced and touch sensitive than all the other JMs I’ve tried.

It's interesting how various solid body guitars retain their character even with different pickups, just the shape of the body actually effects the waveform - according to Jason Lollar. Different woods and pickups change the taste, but the basic flavor still comes through.

A little, but maybe not as much as it seems in the video. I kept amp settings the same between the 2 pickup sets and the Ellis’ having slightly more output it may have been pushing the amp (even though it’s an amp plugin, it’s a famously responsive one) into a little more breakup to bring out the responsiveness. Up the amp gain a smidge or boost the RS’ a little and you pretty much get there.

Sounds brilliant to me! What is the playability and feel of Duo Jet, if compared to Fenders and Gibsons? How easy is it to play?
@nicknihil5882
Жыл бұрын
For some reason the vintage-style Duo Jets have a reputation of being a little unwieldy and I have no idea where that comes from-mine plays incredibly well. When I'm home and want to just pick up a guitar to play, it's the one I pick up the most. I like the body dimensions better than most Fender/Gibson types. The only Fenders I've really gotten along with are offsets-the lack of contour on the Tele at that body width I find uncomfortable on my playing arm and a Strat is too big for its body shape (outside of the Gretsch I'm fond of a lot of EBMMs. I have 2 St Vincents and an Albert Lee HH). My only real Gibson experience is a Firebird, which had tone and playability for days but the body bruised the hell out my arm when I gigged. It was like being back at football practice. But the 2+ inch body thickness of the Jet (same thickness as Les Paul, I believe) with the elevated bridge/neck like a hollow body/jazz box acts like an arm contour in some ways as the strings are a lot further from the body. Action is fabulous, the lowest of guitars, (not that I like shredder low action), it's light as the body is mostly hollow, neck profile is ~medium C .82 at first, .92 at 12th which I love. The hollowness and bridge setup diffuses some of the lows and highs so it sounds fuller/woodier with a strong percussive chunkiness (there's mighty good reason they're legendary rhythm guitars) while still being really clear. You can't really make this guitar muddy. Dark, but not muddy. They're brilliant instruments for sure.

@@nicknihil5882 Wow, that is really helpful, many thanks! Sounds like the playability is really great on Duo Jet. Been looking to find a used one for a long time, and still searching. Really love hollow- and semi hollows, mainly play 335 and Epi Casino these days, both are such fantastic guitars to play. Duo Jet would probably offer same kind of tones as these two, but still it sounds different and especially so very clear and articulate. The body sizes don’t really matter to me, but long necks are the issue for me. Teles and strats feel like a little fight to me, shorter scale ones suit me better. This and the Beatles connections mean a Duo Jet is a must try. One of the coolest looking guitars too. No idea if your bridge is a pinned one or not, but many people prefer a pinned one and/or take it to luthier to do the job. Greetings from Finland.

Yeah, the Duo Jet would work in a lot of the same places as 335’s and Casinos, probably be a bit clearer, more hi fi, ‘acoustic’ like while still being fat, warm, and twangy. In fact I was just running it through some super high gain stuff while working out ideas on a tune for one of my projects-tried the Goldie, the original STV, and my AL HH and I liked how the Goldie hit the high gain the best. I'll try swapping it for Strat in more funk/soul stuff I play in and I like the Goldie in that setting better than a Strat (with good pickups!). A friend of mine who's mainly a jazz player borrowed it for a set and thought it was an impeccable jazz guitar. It's stupid how good this guitar sounds.
