A lot of people I play with want to play tracker follow even when tracker is on the left and I find it to be super ineffective. It could just be me as the tracker but it feels like I move too early they hit it back on 2 and then I have to respect that, or I move too late and they can adjust hitting it out of my reach to the servers initial right, since they had to scoot left. I could totally be missing something but it just seems so much riskier/harder to execute than server follow or just right goes.

Hey Samuel, especially with a right-handed hitter running the server follow is actually really common. Not to say that one is better than the other, but both schemes have their benefits and drawbacks. For example, from the tracker left position a team might be more likey to attack on two like you mentioned and running down a long ball might be easier. However, the distance between the left and right handed wrap shots is shorter for the tracker and the distance to the front of the net is shorter for the server. In the server follow version the left-handed wrap poses a serious threat, but the serving defender has the ability to read the play for a longer duration as most of the contacts happen within their eyesight. All in all, the important thing is to understand your hitter and their tendencies. Which angles and trajectories are they hitting and which of the schemes would be better served for defending those?

I like it, but I think moving laterally into the touch is more game like than 180 spin. Learning side to side footwork while watching hitter and altering balance.

this video was amazing! the only issue i have with tracker follow is often to player behind the net is not involved with the play while they are looping around Vs if the server goes and everyone moves counter clockwise its way easier to be in the right stop already and or have a way easier time adjusting.
@RevisedRoundnet

Hey Carlos, sounds like you’re describing the ‘server follow’ defense where the setter is on the right side and the tracker follows the server counter-clockwise. Totally agree that that defense has some huge benefits as well and we’re considering making another video on that one-have to ask Double Clutch for video permissions first though :)

This video is amazing! Really good explanation and visualization. Would love it if your video footage would be slowed down even more, so my beginner brain could process it even better. And also showing the video footage again after the visualisation. Maybe an additional long form of this video could be interesting. Thanks a lot for putting your time and energy into this. These kind of videos make the whole sport rise in it's level. Greetings from Red Eagles Berlin

Also, it’s crazy how in depth we can still go into some of the details in tracker loop Like the initial defensive touch is ‘rarely’ outside the 7ft circle, this means partners are usually closer together and the recovery set is usually much easier, leading to more defensive conversions These videos on defence are amazing Gavin.
@RevisedRoundnet

There's a handful of additional situations and nuances that deserve their own spotlight--maybe another video even? I would love to revisit this topic at a later date and analyze a few things: 1. The rarely outside 7ft concept you've mentioned above. 2. Mirroring the body defender which puts you in a better position for the recovery set. 3. Communicating with the offensive player (fakes) with your movements to convince them a shot is open or not open. 4. Communicating with your partner with your movements to make them aware of the shots you intend to cover. 5. Pros and cons of the tracker loop defense and other defenses for that matter. We've barely touched the surface!

Is the serving line not 7,5 feet and not 8 from the center of the net ?
@GavinBroekema

Serving line is 8.5 ft from the center of the net and 7 ft from the rim of a spikeball set. The rule was changed from 6 ft to 7ft serve with a lean in 2021!

Id say its if you have two different serves that you are very good at. Especially left and right cut because if you only have one no matter what the opponent will adapt to it. Easiest serve to learn is probably the jam then I would go for a cut serve.

Soft touch rule related question here. I didn´t find the answer anywhere. Do you guys allow to spike right during soft touch? (That would be 1 - 2 - net from one player not involving his team mate what so ever)

It is very hard to actually get corkscrew spin from hitting/serving a ball and what most cut serves do is give the ball “left”side spin which wouldn’t normal make the ball jump if you were aiming straight horizontally in front of you (because the axis of rotation is perpendicular to the net’s plane of contact so the ball’s surface isn’t sliding against the net creating friction to change direction) but it does because we hit downwards at a net so side spin generated in the direction of travel will generate some corkscrew component of spin relative to the net. if that makes sense.
@RevisedRoundnet
2 жыл бұрын
Awesome comment! Agree with this with one caveat, at the top-level (pro) players are hitting the ball with substantially more left corkscrew-spin than left side-spin. When teaching cut serves, we almost always emphasize left corkscrew-spin as the goal since purely left side-spin would either jump slightly in the wrong direction or not jump at all off of the net. There is merit to left side-spin, however, as it seems to be a point of natural progression towards getting more left corkscrew-spin.

@@RevisedRoundnet I dont think anybody is serving having your number 6 sidespin (rotating around the z axis). Its just not physically possible they way we contact the ball on cut serve. Reverse on the other hand is totally different as there it has a 5 spin. if you have a video of someone actually managing to serve where it has a 6 spin (rotating around z axis) i would like to see that :D
