Scat was a great personality and fine Trumpeter. Did some nice sides for Universal in late 40s that are quite rare.

Until I saw this film, I never knew it was possible to stand up from a kneeling position by pushing oneself up on the tops of one's feet...but the extraordinary dancer, Gene Nelson, could do that...and a whole lot more. He was the best of the best.

Those women must have had the muscular control of professional athletes, in order to move that smoothly and gracefully, while wearing costumes and headdresses that were that heavy. (As a man of the theater myself, I can assure anyone who doubts it that the fact that a gown LOOKS gauzy and filmy doesn't keep it from weighing a ton). One glittering, huge-skirted number that Lillian Lorraine wore in the actual Ziegfeld Follies was so encrusted with faux jewels that it weighed SEVENTY POUNDS. n

This was to have been Eleanor Powell's next vehicle after her triumphant showdown with Fred Astaire in 'Broadway Melody of 1940'. Production was set to begin on June 5, 1941, with Hedy and Lana as the other two showgirls and Walter Pidgeon as the boss. But Ellie came down with gallstones and was sick for months, so the script was hastily rewritten to emphasize songs- with Judy Garland, seeking to move beyond her partnership with Mickey Rooney, coming in as the third girl (and not too hot as an actress, it must be said). Traces of the original project are all over the film. Garland had made her name in Powell's 'Broadway Melody of 1938' steered by Roger Edens, Ellie's chief musical helpmate who wrote the bulk of the score for 'Ziegfeld Girl'. The spectacular sets were by Merrill Pye, who had also worked with Powell throughout her time at Metro and who was now her fiancee. The picture was cut by Blanche Sewell, Powell's regular editor, and the costuming was by Gilbert Adrian, her designer. George Murphy, originally announced as the male lead, had already proved in two pictures that he could dance in support of this most demanding of virtuosi. However, since Flo's Glorified Girls only had to walk around without wobbling under the weight of their headgear- which the three chosen ones managed without mishap- the concept sounds limiting for Eleanor. It certainly curbed Busby Berkeley, whose routines had to mimic the stately fashion parades of Flo's Follies. By now Judy was growing to hate Buzz for his despotic ways, whereas with the recuperated Powell- whose professionalism he admired- he would collaborate on the greatest of all solo screen dances, 'Fascinating Rhythm'. Nor could Hedy or Lana sing. Casting Jimmy Stewart as Lana's lovelorn truck driver, btw, is another echo: he had been Ellie's beau in 'Born to Dance' and by some accounts more than a leading man then.

Well if Eleanor Powell had gallstones and therefore not available on June 5, 1941 to start filming Ziegfield Girl then why was she filming Lady Be Good at this time. Apparently Miss Powell was well enough to work. I read that the gallstones happened much earlier....perhaps right after filming Broadway Melody of 1940 which finished filming in 1939. By mid 1941 Miss Powell had recuperated and put in Lady Be Good instead of Ziegfield Girl. I think MGM thought that Miss Powell had lost some of her star power by the time Ziegfield Girl was ready to be filmed and therefore gave her a supporting role in Lady Be Good instead...thus saving Ziegfield Girl for their more promising young stars like Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner and Judy Garland.

@@jackjules7552 Or MGM might have been permitting a more gradual return to the front line- knowing moreover that she was contractually entitled to 13 weeks a year to devise and plan her numbers. Lana and Judy were less well-tried talents who could be whistled up at a day's notice. Ellie's seven-year contract was extended by a year to cover her prolonged recuperation. It expired in '43 after 'I Dood It' wrapped. By then she was embarking on marriage, and had always said she would retire then. She did not want to do the odd guest spot in others' musicals like Ann Miller. She was accustomed to slogging her guts out in films constructed around her. It cannot be overstressed that her status in Hollywood was unique.

@@esmeephillips5888 Miss Powell seemed conflicted about retiring as she was always coming back. You say Miss Powell retired after I Dood It in 1943 but she came right back to do a guest spot in MGM's Thousands Cheer which was released a few months after I Dood It. After a very short break she comes back as the central character in Sensations of 1944 with three dance numbers. Shen then has a baby and goes right back out there on a 1947 national tour dancing in all the prestigious nightclubs throughout the USA including dancing for President Truman. After finishing that tour she goes to Las Vegas in 1948 and gets booked to dance at the newly opened Flamingo Hotel. She barely catches her breath and she is again on the road on a 1949 dancing tour of northern European culminating in a successful run at the Palladium in London. No sooner does she return home to Hollywood than Joe Pasternak hustles her back to the MGM studios to dance and recite some dialogue in the 1950 Duchess of Idaho. After a short rest Miss Powell is hustled to do her first TV appearance in the 1952 All Star Revue where she dances up a storm and does some comedy skits. No sooner is that over than she goes on a 1953 national tour. She then takes a long break from dancing (8 years to be exact) before embarking on another 4 years (1961-1964) of non stop touring and TV performances peppered with many radio interviews. Finally in 1964 she gave her final dance performance and then retired FOR GOOD this time. I heard that producers tried to hustle Miss Powell in 1970 into doing NO NO Nanette on Broadway but Miss Powell did not bite this time. I am sure you probably know all of this but I just thought I would rehash what Miss Powell did during her so called "retirement" years.

One of my favourite old films. Love the cast especially Judy garland, hedy Lemarr, Lana turner and James Stewart. Such a sad ending too. Plus the man who played Judy’s father was great and loved his musical number.
