Nice video. Great sound from the 14 litre V8. No need for stupid side pipes or stacks.

It's because Gardner were stuck in the 1940's. They never developed anything with big power. The very reason Gardner went out of business. The likes of Volvo & Scania forged ahead with driver focused trucks whereas anything British quickly went out of fashion. The likes of Foden/ERF, Sudden Accident (Seddon Atkinson) ect were very poor quality and just plain hard work in comparison.

Gardner engines were great in there day and their reliability was legendary but the introduction of Cummins Engines started there downfall in 1966. Haulage Company's wouldn't wait the 2yrs it took to take delivery of a new truck fitted with a Gardner Engine,Cummins took advantage of this and whilst hauliers were a bit reluctant to try these new engines it wasn't long before the tide turned and because of their superior power they soon became accepted and finished Gardner.

Interesting, you can understand how management destroyed great companies like these.

Absolutely brilliant. Typical 180, could use them for Badger Gassing until they warm up. We had a 8 wheel tipper that was short and was plated for 26 ton. Happy days but bloody cold in winter. Hope she’s still going well

This takes me back. I used to drive a Seddon diesel with a 180 Gardiner and a David Brown box with an Eaton splitter axle. It was essentially a day cab with a Jennings coffin riveted on the back. Bloody noisy and uncomfortable, but I'd love to get hold of the old girl now.

Good to see a short bed twin steer180 still being looked after. People don't realise just how much the road systems have changed and that these heavy load carriers where necessarily short and twin steer due to the rural roads and the twisting A roads....one of my earliest memories is of being in a at d full of green ERF 180's in the very late 60's or early 70's. I still love the smell of the 180 firing up on cold winter mornings...that and the smell of coaches of the same or earlier era. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
