Sends data until a break might be needed, where XOFF command is sent. When transmission is to start again, then the XON command is sent. **The Roles of Protocols at Different Levels** **Application level protocols** Application level is the level where user is controlling the information technology **HTTP → Hypertext transfer protocol** - Protocol that allows web browsers to communicate with web servers. Governs how information is transmitted between them - Enables caching (Allows web browsers to store copies of resources such as images on user’s computer for easy access) **SMTP → Simple mail transfer protocol** - Protocol that helps send emails between 2 servers. Responsible for transmission of email messages from sender’s email client to recipient - Includes error detection/correction mechanisms to ensure message delivered correctly. **SSL (Newer TLS) → Secure sockets layer (Transport layer security)** - Protocol encrypting communication between client (**I.e. Web browser**) and server (**I.e. Website**) - Works using combination of public and private key encryption. Public key used to encrypt before sending. Private key used to decrypt data when received. - Also uses digital certificates to ensure client is authentic, ad communication is not being intercepted **Communication control/addressing level protocols** Communication control/addressing level is the level where data is being prepared to be later sent in the transmission level **TCP → Transmission control protocol** - Responsible for establishing reliable, error-free data transfer between applications on different devices connected to internet - Works by dividing data into segments called packets, which are transmitted over network to destination. Makes sure data is sent in correct order to ensure error free - Does handshaking to ensure transfer speeds, protocols are all the same **IP → Internet protocol** - Responsible for addressing/routing packets of data across internet - Packets in TCP have header that contains info about source and destination IP addresses. - Just finds route. TCP provides data transfer. **Transmission level protocols** **Ethernet** - Enables devices in LAN (also bus, star topologies) to communicate/transmit data - Uses frame structure to transmit data over network. Frames include header/payload. Header consists of source and destination MAC address. - Also ensures there is no data collision by listening **********************Token Ring Protocol********************** - A token is passed around network. - When device wants to transmit data, token is captured, and data is added. Token goes to destination, and token is released - Not possible for data collision
