Asha's motives were naive and selfish and she is just... never held accountable for this. She never grows or learns anything. The plot forces her to be right and Magnifico to be wrong. Hell they even wrote in an evil book to mind control him JUST SO HE'D BE BAD

I just watched this movie having the lowest expectations from the reviews and it occurs to me that Magnifico was a paranoia ridden narcissist and honestly Asha did nothing wrong. Magnifico overeacted and turned himself 100% villain, all on his own, and was punished for it. He wasn't screwed by anybody.

I haven’t seen anyone else note that Asha’s wish was for something more than what they have; not better. After her wish the king starts to become a villain and I firmly believe it’s the result of her wish.

How come nobody else is pointing out that The Princess and the Frog did the whole "Dreams will only come true if you make them come true yourself" message a whole lot better? I mean, Tiana worked at least two jobs to save for her very own restaurant, and she ALMOST had it! Yes, she had to pull some strings that DID require magic, but she already had all the money she needed to fund it. If anything, THAT'S more inspirational than anything Asshat did in the entire movie!

Gettin’ real sick of people having opinions on this movie without having actually watched it. Or are we just gonna brush past: 1. Magnifico’s entire kingdom was based on a lie since he did not tell people that he had no intention of ever granting the majority of wishes; 2. The one pre-dark magic wish we see him grant, was done out of spite in order to hurt Asha and an uninvolved innocent 100-year-old man; and 3. The moment something happens that he isn’t familiar with, he immediately reaches for the dark magic book and is only stopped by the Queen being nearby. Gettin’ reeeeeeal sick of people not noticing the very obvious cues that Magnifico was a disaster waiting to happen and that Rosas was a ticking time bomb of Magnifico’s paranoia and spite.

It's not even just a matter of some wishes being evil and the potential for the wish to be granted in a negative way. There's also the distinct possibility that the wish, even when pure and good and granted in good faith, could have side consequences that one might not expect. There's any number of ways almost any wish could result in something bad happening, so being careful is only practical. And it might have made a more interesting story too, forcing the girl to learn a lesson about the chaos that can be brought on by not thinking things through or thinking that kindness and generosity means giving people whatever they want. Could even still make Magnifico the bad guy, but have a certain tragic edge to it as she has to realize that even if he became bad, he didn't start that way, and in the end he was entirely right.

Keep in mind as well that Magnifico was giving them free food and housing when he gets nothing out of it because he can just magic up or pay for whatever he wants, but he does it anyway because he wants to help people. He also was taking people's wishes and granting some of them before he even knew that having other people's wishes is a way to become more powerful. He had the great power and he took on the great responsibility that came along with it (being careful as to who he grants wishes to) until Disney decided that he is evil now and made him possessed. Then after he is defeated, he is replaced by Asha as a wish granter (even though the movie was trying to say that everyone should work towards their own wishes and having one person controlling who gets their wishes granted is bad) who doesn't care about the ramifications as long as it makes her feel happy inside that she has "helped" people.

There's actually a manga where, around the halfway point, a bunch of shit goes down and it creates a world where anything anybody imagines becomes true, the only limit being that you couldn't directly affect the body of you or anyone else. It was meant to be a utopia, but one person imagined a zombie apocalypse, and it came true. Then someone imagined, "Hey, what if we could effect our bodies?" And then everything just ended. Anybody who didn't have another person to reference off of would inevitably end up phasing out of existence due to their imagination taking power over their physical form. It was kind of terrifying, actually, not even God could do anything about. In fact, God fell victim and stopped existing. The manga is called Shimeji Simulation, by Tsukumizu. All of his works are really depressing and introspective

Magnificent is somehow the villain when he created a paradise with no starvation homelessness and no one has to pay any taxes and they don’t have to pay for a house AND if he grants one persons wish every month or year (it doesn’t really matter) more wishes would still be fulfilled than if he didn’t grant or take any wishes.

@@ozvuchkibilla Magnifico was never evil from the start. The reason he became evil is because Asha wished upon a star instead of giving her wish to Magnifico. Remember, Magnifico's home was destroyed when he was a kid, so he didn't want to risk that happening again, which is why he used the dark magic book, which in turn corrupted him to the point that he couldn't come back from it. Absolutely NOTHING was stopping the people in the kingdom from leaving if they wanted to before Magnifico opened the book. Sure he had a bit of an ego, but that was about as bad as he got before opening the book. The point is there was nothing for Asha to free the people from until Magnifico used the book. Something SHE caused unintentionally.

Denying the grandfather's wish is something that presents two big problems: 1) Magnifico is a paranoid and egocentric man who fears losing his power, and "inspiring the new generation" doesn't necessarily mean that the grandfather wants a revolution (and revolutions don't tend to be something negative anyway). 2) Magnifico doesn't fully understand the wishes, and this invalidates his decision to realize others, which he may have misunderstood. Other problems with Magnifico: 3) His decision to not fulfill the wishes of Asha's family members is pure revenge. 4) Magnifico is uncontrollable, he's not subjected to anyone's judgement, he arbitrarily decides what is right and what is not. 5) It's not possible that there are no taxes, because for a state to do anything it needs money and resources. Even food has to be grown by someone, so someone must works. 6) Magnifico has completely banned magic, except his own. 7) Magnifico can destroy the wishes (without informing the citizens of this). 8) Magnifico agrees to use dark magic, no one forced him to do so. 9) May I know who has something negative as the most important wish of their life? Or something terrible? I think very few people. 10) The fact that people are happy in Rosas doesn't justify Magnifico, and saying that this is not true means approving the phrase "Mussolini also did good things" (those who are Italian will understand).

Its not just that they willingly gave up their wishes to live in safety... They specifically gave up their wishes for a chance for that wish to someday be granted. Think about it... You _could_ toil and work hard to maybe fulfill your wish on your own (though many of the wishes are NOT able to be fulfilled by hard work alone, such as the wish to be able to fly) and all that hard work might not even pay off... OR you could give your wish to Magnifico, stay in Rosas with everything provided for you, you don't even have to pay for houses or do taxes, and maybe someday your wish will get an automatic pass as a bonus. The only downside is that you'll feel kinda dead inside (but I dunno about you, that doesn't sound much different from normal). This story could have been about how you shouldn't just sit idly by waiting for someone else to fulfill your wish, and instead go out and work to make your dreams a reality, but nope. That's not what they wanted to do. Instead everyone should just MAGICALLY get their wishes fulfilled, regardless of whether they're good wishes or not. They completely gloss over the fact that some people might have messed up wishes.

Disney could have done an amazing bait and switch, having Asha steal the book and become possessed because she thinks she's doing the right thing, only to realize Magnifico was right once some wishes begin causing chaos, then she has an emotional scene where she apologizes to Magnifico and they work together to fix things. The drama! It would have been a fun twist and have a good moral but instead Disney made a movie about getting what you want no matter what.

I agree with almost everything you said, but I have always had a gripe with this argument... even if it's true that people gave Magnifico their wishes willingly as a condition to live under his kingdom, as I understood, Magnifico lied to the people of Rosas. He told them that wishes will be granted at random, and therefore, nobody knew that their wish could stay ungranted forever; they all thought that every wish could be selected. So, the thing that I think Magnifico did wrong is taking away wishes and never give them back, even if he decided that they will never be granted. We knew from the film thar Asha's grandfather and friend had a lot of issues because they got ripped of their wishes and they never came true (in the grandfather's case, at least). Magnifico should have gave wishes back to the people if he thought them to be dangerous. I think the movie tries to express that issue; not that you should grant every single wish, but that wishes are part of us and we are the only ones who should decide to pursue them or not. Yes, the movie did that badly but oh well. (Excuse me if my english was bad, Im not a native speaker)

One of the things about wishes is that it doesn't even have to be bad wishes that are the issue What if wishes contradict each other? Two people that love the same person and wish to be wit them? A mother that wants their child to get a certain job but the child want's a different one
