Great thing! But it can not turn in horizontal directions, if you add second hyrodin and turn them in 45 degrees you will be able to control device in all three axes!

It could theoretically use that sideways inertial balancing wheel to lean to one side while moving forward; causing its path to curve.

Yeah, 3 gyroscopes and a triaxial accelerometer are used to measure the pitch, roll and yaw angles

Now try that with a crank and pedals using two reciprocating actuators. That's true simulation of a unicycle. Now, that would be impressive.

Thanks, the power is transmitted to the wheel using a transmission belt.

Thanks! I've used sliding mode control for stabilization of both directions of the unicycle and have used a cascaded control structure with a PID controller to also be able to control the position of the drive wheel in order to perform the steps.
