Beautiful! And finally we get to see the whole skate, in one long, gorgeous sweep, not just the jumps. Not so much wishing that Shoma will win tomorrow, as that he will knock everyone’s eyes out - driving Stephane and the audience to screams - as he skates a free that meets his own complex standards.

I forgot how absolutely tender and effortless Oboe Concerto was as an Exhibition piece. One of his most exquisite skates. I am so excited and also a little worried to see Shoma work on skating with “Expression” for next season, because “Expression” means beautiful and evocative movements but fewer jumps and thus fewer medals and probably a lot fewer gold medals. JSF will not be happy with him; I hope Stephane will understand. Even Jason Brown, that wonderfully expressive skater, is skating without numerous quads because he simply cannot jump them. In the super competitive world of men’s figure skating, fewer jumps means not winning; Shoma is the only skater I know who is purposefully willing to lower his base value in scoring to achieve the beauty he wants, rather than just earn more points and more medals. Mihoko, his early coach, was right to call him the bravest skater she knew.
