As a young boy/teen he was my absolute hero. He taught me so much about being an urbane man. So very much. So much intellect, character and panache. This was so much of a challenge for this you black child of the Los Angeles Unified School District. No one comprehended what I was imitating but I had a glorious time when ever I could employ or deploy this character. Good times in mid century Los Angeles South Central Los Angeles….

"I think pessimism is completely out of date. I think that's a romantic indulgence. I don't think anybody can afford to be pessimistic any more. I mean, there's so much that can go wrong, optimism is the only thing possible any more. I've always thought that an optimist was a person who knew exactly how sad a place the world could be; and a pessimist is a man who finds this out anew every morning. That's the real difference. I'm obviously optimistic, because you simply have to be! It's an obligation." - Peter Ustinov, towards the end of this brilliant compilation

J’adorai lorsqu'il passait à la télévision française, il parlait dans un français parfait et pratiquait un humour tellement anglais et "pince sans rire" que cela en devenait adorable

I was really knocked out when I first watched this and heard the fascinating story (15:20) of the meeting at their family home that if the German contingent that come over to warn about what Hitler was up to were believed could've lessened or negated the need for or at the very least lessen the effects of WWII is amazing.

His nation in his own mind is fascinating, it’s the inverse of the body politic in fact. An individual organising himself as if he were a nation, rather than a nation organising itself as if it were an individual. Fascinating approach! 4:30

So one day someone in the class asked him about the football match or someting> The boys in the class were all mad Rangers Fans. One of the boys asked if he used t0 play football. He wasnt trying to be funny. He was just one of the dummies.Teacher says oh yes but they always put me in goal because of this DAMN gammy leg. a few days later, while walking down the bits btween desks and fell over a lassies bag . He was actually lying on the floor but got up . and without missing a beat, said "as i was saying about Mr.Orwell". Cool bloke >Mr. Grant his name was. Respect .Sir.

I don't wish to disparage either as I regard both as highly as is possible, however in my eyes, I can't resist comparing Peter Ustinov & Stephen Fry. Eloquent, multi-talented, king hearted, funny and a humanist. Imagine a conversation between the two 🤯

Where is the BBC program where Ustinov impersonates some contemporary classical composers (such as Bruno Heinz JaJa, a/k/a Bruno Maderna, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luigi Nono), as well as British, American and Scandinavian composers. I heard it years ago at the home of composer Elliott Carter but have looked in vain for it for years. Does anyone know where it is? For we music lovers it is just about the funniest Ustinov ever! Truly genius and roll on the floor funny.
