According to the BBC Genome this is slightly earlier than 1979 - 7th September 1978 to be exact. As a result, it's from the first series in which Top Gear was shown nationwide!

Very good show back in the day vehicles weren't really to highest quality and safety, thanks Barrie Gill for excellent cominating ,this was really the beginning of top gear taken on Big challenges and risks even before James may , Richard Hammond and Jeremy clarkston came along although they made it amazing ,the road was set for not just looking at vehicles but having fun with them and pushing them, like the red Toyota pick up they brought out and they couldn't kill it

Thanks for the upload, I really miss things like this. No amount of production value or clout could match this type of swag. It was just a different time I guess.

I had several R6, great little cars, served me well on a 20 mile commute into W. London, never had the 4wd version though .BTW the car featured here appears to still exist, although the DVLA says it has not had its 1st. MOT!

Не корректно сравнивать рамные внедорожники с несущим кузовом(по сути паркетники), надо было и уаз наш в сравнение добавить и то если бы в ниве сидел водитель который знает как на ней надо ездить , она была бы первой

The Jeep Cherokee/Wagoneer is not America's answer to the Range Rover. The Range Rover was Britain's answer to the Jeep. It came out years before. Great test on the cars, though.

I love the bit where he says something like “….Viewers who drove the Jeep in World War 2….” Amazing to think that in 1979 many people sitting watching this at home in slippers had fought in the Battle of Britain and the D-Day landings. Great episode.

if that cherokee had the buick 5.7 it woulda had a better chance on that final hill, buick's low-rpm torque curve woulda gave it a big edge with traction, lighter than the rest of American small blocks too, 450 pounds fully dressed compared to amc's 540 pound 5.9

I was 10 years old when this episode aired. Now I'm a 55 year old grumpy old man. Hard to believe how long I watched Top Gear. I would still be watching if they didn't can the show. I still have re runs at least. But I will be damned if I ever watch that pitiful American version. It's absolutely appalling.

What's amazing about this landrover is that it's powered by an American V8 sourced from Buick. This Rover has a 3.5 l Buick V8 known as the 215 aluminum V8 showcase by Buick in the early 1960s and also used by Oldsmobile with a turbocharger in the early 1960s. Although having a extra head bolt, taking it to 5 head bolts per cylinder. Rover continue to use this general motors or Buick sourced V8 all aluminum for a very long time and even took it from 3.5 l to I believe 5 l and beyond. Another descendant from this from this aluminum V8 designed and the late 50s and produced in the early 60s was the general motors 3800 or 3.8 l. 3800 is one of the most reliable durable engines of all time. And yes it is derived from the Rover V8 and the Buick 215, the turbo rocket V8 from Oldsmobile

I had a 1984 CJ7 with the 4.2 l inline 6. It was automatic with locking hubs on the front axle with a high and low speed transfer case. It was pretty significant as a a four-wheelerl drive machine. The building of the straight six did produce impressive power
