Ooo thank you. I also have an AO Smith. I just changed out my anode rod, and pilot light won't light up. I actually started the anode process yesterday (turn off this & that & run hot water, etc) but had a concern so reversed course. Today, gave it a go, noticed a drippy TMP, it dripped all night. Anyway, finished the anode rod exchange (pulled out a long wire, nothing left on it!) and tried to relight the pilot. No go. So, I'll let things dry up overnight and give this repair a try tomorrow. I did find a video that explained how to do this step Mr Eric described - Thank you Sir!! (look for FREE Fix! Pilot Light That WON'T STAY LIT on Water Heater by Handyman Hertz - kzitem.info/news/bejne/l31_mJhuqmSba4o)

There is a much easier way of doing this. Simply hold down the "end call" button on the right side of the steering wheel until your infotainment center goes completely black. Seems like it takes forever, but trust me, it will go black. When it does, let go of the button, when it all boots back up, it will be in driver mode. This fixes most glitches with the infotainment center in general. Your dealership should have done this for you before you drove off the lot.

Hi, noticed video on truck. I have same truck and can not seem to make the animation on led lights work when walking up to it. Does your truck have animation. Sorry to comment under wrong video, but appered comments turned off on truck video. Thanks.

I'll see if I can fix the comments section on the truck! Thanks for letting me know. On my truck, since it's an upgraded light system and not the higher trim level, it doesn't do the light sequence when approaching the vehicle. I think that's only available on the ltz or high country. I can ask my buddy that works for chevy for sure. I bet it's a simple programming thing.

Dud this twice on my current water heater and several times on my gas fireplace. I like to sand off the thermocouple, the spark electrode and the pilot gas tube. Pretty sure the spark goes between the gas tube and the electrode so both need to be clean in order to get a good spark. The thermocouple needs to be clean in order to be able to heat up when the pilot flame surrounds it. I have a different model water heater but essentially the same arrangement of parts. Mine is a little tricky to get the assembly out after moving the two screws on the sides... just had to jiggle it around gently until gas tube comes out of the control valve.

Thank you for posting this. I have a 10 year old Rheem (GE). Woke up yesterday to no hot water. Checked the unit. The pilot light is out. So i contacted GE who walked me through troubleshooting. We verified the piezo electric device was emitting a spark. So apparently either the wire to the end of the pilot where the flame should be, has failed or the contact as you are describing. I will pu Since it Sunday, l Will open it and verify it cannot be corrected by cleaning the contact surface. If not I will hopefully be able to get the part tomorrow at Standard Appliance Parts. Will post update for anyone trying to fix their own water heater.

Will have to try this thanks for the info, our ao smith currently won't even produce a visible spark when pressing igniter button but its probably dirty in there being its an outside unit and is going on 12 yrs old.
@ericpendi8001

No problem. You can also get the bic ligtlhters that have a long stem and take them apart. The clicker part is the same as the igniter for your hot water heater. You can always use that. That's what I had to do.

@@ericpendi8001 Thanks we ended up manually lighting pilot with a lighter based on a couple other YT videos but the burner sounded bad, it was flaming way more aggressively than normal and with bright yellow flames & had a deep fluttering sound like combustion, not even sure how long it had been doing that but it didnt seem safe lol, we ended up ordering a new burner assembly which came with a new gas valve, rest of the tank seems to be in decent shape so figured a lot cheaper than buying a whole new water heater + install cost, I installed new burner/valve a few days ago and all is well again. the old burner assembly had a decent size tear in the screen and was pretty dirty, I had tried cleaning burner screen best I could before ordering new parts but it still had the abnormal / aggressive burning behavior, the new burner is way more tame sounding & quiet.

Hi how are you? I have a question about your A.O. Smith pro max electric water heater , pilot light ? Do you have to turn off the gas line before removing the pilot light unit ! Or just plug and play
@ericpendi8001

Yes turn off gas! You should have a shut off valve close to the unit.

not sure i understand ur talk through! wish you could have simply reproduced the process! you say "disconnect" the "3 lines", but not clear what END of those lines you disconnected!
@ericpendi8001
3 жыл бұрын
Theres 2 or 3 gas lines that come out of your water heater unit, follow those lines to the block were the main gas line hooks up. Disconnect the lines from there to remove the ignitor assembly, pretty sure that's the only place you can disconnect the lines.

Honestly a poorly made how to fix video since there was no video showing the procedure ....but at the same time thank you for the Inspiring story which motivated me to mess more with mine. n my case the pilot somply went out for unknown reason?? Maybe air in propane tank? IDK....Anyway after many failed attempts to light I listened to your story and started to undo everything to pull it out and clean....took the panel screws out and tried to first unplug the two wires on my unit other than the ignitor (this one is 2019 Rheem water heater with Honeywell controller) but the wires plug did not want to come out and I was afraid to force it....then for the hell of it I tried one more time to light pilot and VIOLA! Lit right off and we have hot water again! yeah! So thanks for the inspiration....I scared it into submission! LOL

@ericpendi8001

I wouldn't recommend removing the sight glass. I'm not an expert on water heaters. Those 2 bolts should be the only things holding that plate in place. Unless your lines are so tight that it wont allow it to move.

good info but I wouldn't suggest a homeowner who isn't well adept at mechanical work or have a good working knowledge of good basic tools and basic plumbing use ,should not try this at home, remember that water heaters are under pressure and gas if it ever leaks has a potential to cause a serious disaster. If a homeowner has some trepidation concerning doing this kind of work, I suggest he/she call a handyman or maybe a local neighbor who he/she knows can do this type of work and ask them to do it for them instead.
