Frank’s entrance on his solo is epic. He doesn’t just tentatively ease in here- from the first note he’s definitive about his musical thoughts.

THIS IS THE PALERMO CONCERT THAT LASTED 40 MINUTES DUE TO THE RIOTS IN THE STADIUM. THE GROUP WAS SURROUNDED BY MOSQUITOES (SEE THE COVER OF "THE MAN FROM UTOPIA"). FRANK WAS VERY HESITANT TO PLAY IN PALERMO ON THE 1982 EUROPEAN TOUR BUT HIS FRIEND MASSIMO BASSOLI CONVINCED HIM. GREAT SOLO BY FRANK AND WE ALSO HEAR VERDI'S AIDA

Best Guitar solo I ever heard. Frank! You crazed genius. 50 years I still can't get enough. A little Zappa every day keeps me going in these days of post freedom, post liberty and post justice. Not to mention post music.

Quite standard jazzfusion solo's over a chord riff...why is everyone so impressed? I was a FZ + The Mothers fan in the old days. But the long jazzrock solo's are not as interesting as the music of Zawinul, or today groups, like Snarky Puppy and many others great young jazz fusion players of our time. But in the eighties it might have been still new.. And by the way, I don't understand why FZ is conducting the straight forward music of the band (playing march in 4/4)? It looks to me like FZ is somewhat posing. When FZ was working on his complex more classical inspired music with a large orchestra, than it maked sense (Yellow Shark). This is almost like acting. Sorry.

Probably because improvisation is often a representation of the musician's personality and some people prefer the personalities of Zappa and his band members over Zawinul, Snarky Puppy, ect. Or perhaps they dig it all and are just vibing to the music in this video and commenting their excitement.

Don't get me wrong here, I worship the ground FZ walks on, but the conducting just seemed very pretentious. The fact that he stopped and the band carried on perfectly just shows how unnescessary it was.

why the copyright is 1978, as the recording is said to be 1982? Is that the copyright of the tune, not de recording? And why do we see FZ almost all the time in the film, while the band is playing his great music? He produced the film, so he could have made other choices...? Now it looks like a fan who caught FZ with a mobil (wich didn't exist in those days).

It takes a very high degree of tastefulness to utilize pitch bending and shifting as well as Frank did. That guitar solo is absolutely monstruous, made moreso by the excellent key change that precedes it. You know it's coming, but it's still a fantastic ride.

Rolf. I appreciate your well written comments. Yes. There is no way to understand the brilliance that was Frank Zappa. I was lucky enough to have been able to see him a tremendous amount of times starting in 1968 at the Fillmore East. We both agree. It was the very best music and I’m so happy I was part of the fan base !

This is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but I think Zappa conducting is totally unnecessary. At least in this case but most other band performances too. Other than that, Frank was and forevermore will be da man!

The idiots might play well but they wrecked the band by hating the bass player making him walk away; that band had a few years left otherwise.
