Nice video. I'm impressed with how well it helps lift your outback on top of your Wrangler. Really well done demonstration. I've got the pro angler 14 which is heavier and wider. Assuming I can get it on the hullavator in it's down position (which I'm sure is going to be a fun lift), do you think it will lift it on my Wrangler too?
@Trooper347
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! From what I can gather, the Pro Angler 14 has a width of 38 inches, which would be too wide for the Hullavator (my Outback is at 33). It just will not adjust that far out to fit the kayak on it upside down. It would also be pushing the limits of the weight rating for the Hullavator itself. If i may suggest, there is a better solution for your kayak if you have the Congo Cage already... the Rhino Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter is meant for larger single kayaks or small boats, and would work VERY well on wranglers in my opinion.

Question due to I was born with CP which effects the right side of my body. I can’t use my hand but I’m able to use my arm. So my question is this: will those handles remain unlocked once you press down on them or do you have to keep your hands on them to raise and lower the kayak?
@Trooper347
5 жыл бұрын
Each side has a "latch" that must be held down to disengage the mechanism that lock the carrier in the up or down position, so both hands must be used. However, I have read on some forums of people bypassing one side for whatever reason by placing a tennis ball or other object inside the handle/latch to keep it from moving, thus allowing only one side to lock in the up or down position. There is a problem doing this though. When removing the kayak from the carrier, if the latch has not locked properly down and with no weight to keep the tension in the down position, it will fly back to the top of the vehicle from to the travel position quite strongly, possibly damaging the carrier. I personally would not use this method.

Hey Eugene, Great video! What model Hullavators are you using are those Hullavator 897 or Pro 898's? I just bought the Pro 898's which are supposed to fit up to a 36" wide kayak but they wouldn't fit my Hobie Outback 2018 version (33" width) unless I did exactly what you did to give the cradles more width.

Hey man, great video demonstrating the Hobie Outback with the Hullavator. Thanks! Do you have any more info on using the Skybox for a fishing rod locker? I am currently planning on doing the same thing. I'm not sure if I should try to install rod mounts inside or some foam in the corners to protect the rod tips. I can't find any info out there on using a Skybox for fishing rods and it would be great to see your setup. Thanks!

Thanks for watching. I did not mount any rod holders into the Skybox to preserve the integrity and waterproofing of the box. I did however purchase a set of Rod Condoms to help protect my rods (they have foam to protect tips), and I place rods in the bottom first before other items. I can highly recommend them, I've never lost an eyelet, don't have tangled lines, and never hooked myself in 2 years of loading/unloading gear. You may have luck mounting holders, I was too afraid to try. Hope this helps!

Just curious are you still using the Hullavator for your Outback, have you had any problems with it? It's only rated to lift 75 lbs but the dry weight of the Outback is 81 pounds. I'm about to have one installed on my car and I have an Outback as well.

@Trooper347
7 жыл бұрын
I am glad the video helped out... Yakima had made an interchangeable claw that could customize LowRider Max towers to fit factory side-rails. Of the three claws they made, the c2 fit the Kingo Cage size tube. Apparently these parts are outdated and discontinued, but a quick search for Yakima C2 Claw can be found a couple of places online like ReRack or Ebay. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for this video. I have been trying to figure out the best way to get two Hobie Outbacks on top of a 2016 Subaru Outback. The Hullavator looks good, but in other videos I always see people struggling to get a kayak in them. You have made it look doable. I love your strap idea to get a better grip on the Outback. I bought sticky, texture grip gloves today so I can possibly get a better grasp of my Outbacks when moving them.

+Karen Phillips I am glad this video helped. From my understanding, you may be able to get a Thule Fit Kit that replaces your stock swinging crossbars with a semi-permanent Thule system (square bars, mount feet to place where stock arms are removed) tho I am not sure if they have the new model made for a 2016 (2015 thule May fit?) 58" bars would be the bare minimum needed for 2 hullavators side by side. Good luck, safe travels :)

I gotta figure out how to transport 2 outbacks on my Subaru forester. Would a roof rack be wide enough to attach another thule/outback on the other side of your vehicle? The outback is such a wide kayak, just wondering if the space is there. Thx
@Trooper347
9 жыл бұрын
m klinge On my Jeep the 58 inch wide Yakima bars would allow for a Hullavator on the other side as well, with about an inch to spare between the two racks when in travel position, and if needed a set of 66 inch bars would widen that space. While I know my Jeep would be able to handle the weight, I would suggest to find out the rated weight capacity of any factory car/suv roof rack or mounting options that Yakima offers (base plates) before mounting two Hullavators on a vehicle that differs from my own set up to ensure safe road travel. Most factory auto racks I have researched are only rated for 100 lbs or so. Thanks for watching, I hope this helps you in your decision.

Thanks! Do you keep your cage on all the time? Also what are those straps you used to help keep the other side of the kayak up while loading it in the beginning...good idea. Could you elaborate on the straps and where they are?
@Trooper347
9 жыл бұрын
Amanda Brown Yes, I do keep the cage on full time. The Hullavator system and Skybox both can be removed in less than 5 minutes. I have straps mounted inside the kayak (fast removal once kayak is unloaded) run just through the lift handles and other mounting points (like seat mount points), for ease of controlling the weight of the kayak when lifting. They were just some cinch straps I had laying around cut to length to fit the inside dimensions. Right about the 4:55 minute mark is the first set of straps I tried kzitem.info/news/bejne/xW-D0Z19pYd0qpg then I switched to a single strap run through the same mounting points. The straps I use to secure the kayak to the Hullavator system came with it, 2 tie-down straps, 2 front/rear ratchet rope tie-downs. The kayak fits inside the upright "u" brackets of the Hullavator, and the straps keep the kayak from bouncing up and down when mounted in travel position. The front/rear ratchet ropes prevent front/rear of the kayak, so there are 4 points of safety holding the kayak while travelling.

23v0lv32 Thank you. Yes, the soft top (or hard top) can be folded/removed by removing the two bolts (some people replace bolts with eye-bolts for ease of removal) that hold the cage to the front of the jeep, and it hinges rearward. All in all I am very happy and can recommend the cage 100%

***** The Interco SS tires were superb for muddy rides, never got stuck when using them off-road. On-road was slightly different, I noticed a loss of control on wet roads especially when braking (slips and pulls to either side), Being my daily driver as well as weekend toy I'd rather not take those risks, but for a dedicated rig, I would recommend them in a heartbeat.
