Still have my Marantz 2230 that I received as a 16Th Birthday gift from my parents in 1975. These were durable receivers and many are still.going strong after nearly 50 years! 😊

In a lot of ways this is a swell stereo receiver. When receiver shopping in 1979 I almost bought this SX-880. Compared to the SX-850 this model is almost devoid of features. The low (subsonic) filter while effective at 15Hz only has a 6dB/Oct slope, not very useful. My biggest caveat is that it puts out the same power into 8 as 4 ohms. A well designed amp should provide a bit (10w or so) more power into 4 ohms than into 8 ohms. Pretty to look at but not as desirable as an SX-850 or SX-838. I purchased a Hitachi SR-804 instead of this SX-880 in 1979 and still use it as my main amp. Still though, this SX-880 would be fun to try out.

I actually came here specifically to see if you would show the technique you used to clean the knobs and front facia. I have a 650 that works great but I really want to make it sparkle and have no idea what the best cleaning products are to make it pop without erasing the lettering. I was a bit disappointed that we were treated to 4 minutes of staring at a volt meter but you completely glossed over how to get such a lovely finish.

Cleaning is usually done by using dawn dish soap and a toothbrush under running water, for stubborn areas I use 91% alcohol. Dry everything with compressed air and reassemble.

I found one in the trash the other day along with a Thorens TD145. The right hand channel isn’t working, looks like right hand power amp is not working, it doesn’t warm up like the left one. Preamp works fine. Will have it repaired if I can’t find an obvious problem.

Just took a screenshot at 12:38, I think I may be in love. 650 is truly a masterpiece industrial design and like you say, their SQ is to die for. I listen to mine everyday. When I venture to BB and listen to their mainstream offerings I always found they sound horrible in comparison. they clip at 9 or 10 o'clock, not pleasant at all. If you want great sound nowadays you have to go $high-end$ such as Luxman or Pioneer Elite if not ultra-high-end like Simaudio Moon or Mark Levinson but for that I'd have to sell my home lol

I have a restored 650, apart from sounding great its looks are quite distinctive: no plastic, not a single push-button on it only toggles and knobs which makes for an exceptionally symmetric and clean finish. Still have all the original bulbs and their amberish glow soothes us at night.

@@caspianwendell Hey sorry about bothering you every day (JK) but I had forgotten what I had meant to say when I came back here yesterday. That is, as a fellow hobbyist restorer of late 60's to 1978, (in my case st least, I stick with Japanese made receivers and the odd McIntosh even though the Mac sound is not my cup of tea so I flip them) would you agree that power packs have no negative effect on the "Pioneer sound" of the 650? To me they don't, in fact I think much of the 650's reputation for excellent QS had something to do with the technology. People on audio forums cite heat as a major problem. Those who claim that have obviously never seen a Mac in action. Of course the PP's produce a lot of heat but Pioneer designed the unit taking that into account. Heat damage on 650's is rare.

I was having the same problems calibrating mine, each range being "off" a little from the prior ones. Is this "normal", considering we're dealing with a kit built, 50+ year old device with 50+ year old components? When I first got mine, a 25 cent battery was still in it (a big lump of corrosion) but after clean up, calibration (STILL not 100% sure if I have it right) and a new battery, it works!! I bid $15 on another Eico 232, I'll scavenge the knobs and leather strap (strap looks brand new!!) from it if/when I get it!!

I contacted Heyboer and told them what I needed and they built me a brand new one. They were the original manufacturer for eico and still had all specs for the transformer.
