why do the contestants look like they are robots or they have been held captive?

+thiruvetti The inspiration for Mastermind was a World War II interrogation - one spotlight in the detainee's face and being questioned repeatedly. The contestants always look like that because of the pressure and obviously, no one wants to be embarrassed on TV.
