Funny how the discussion is about an unpickable lock, but the questions should be: are locks still picked? at least here in europe, there is practically no lockpicking anymore. non-inbuild ones are opened via "masterkeys" (aka bolt cutters or other cutting tools). inbuild ones are opened via "leveragekeys" (screwdriver, crowbar etc.)

I think the reason people do minimum is, at least on single family homes, there's tons of ways to get in if you want to. I really only see badass locks being good for an apartment with a reinforced door.

Ive seen many videos of lock picking and explanation on how it works, but no matter how good they try to explain I didn't get it. You have avery unique way of explaining using real world objects, thats simple and easy to understand.

Won’t stop a crowbar. “Can’t be picked” won’t really do much if the thief really wants to get in.

As a self taught locksmith over a VERY well known airplane OEM, I learned many pick techniques, but certainly not my only job. However, you have to STOP thinking like a locksmith, and start thinking like a criminal! Crims do NOT PICK LOCKS! They are WAY too stupid for that. Always remember that. Drill stops, shear protection, etc. They are coming in for force, not picks.

Bolt cutters and bricks make for a much quicker entry into most homes/vehicles. This would be cool for a lockbox or the like though. Nice work 👍

I feel like the best way to attack this lock would be blunt force. Basically, if the lock his not in a door or similar, you could hit it with a mallet to bump the watchdog pin up and circumvent the entire mechanism that sets this lock apart. So first, stick the inner core to the midcore somehow (a drop of superglue perhaps), then hit it with a mallet to bind the watchdog pin. Pick the rest as normal.

But the question is, a unpickable lock necessary? I would say in this case you are just creating a bigger problem if you lose your keys and need a locksmith, because a thief would have no problem breaking in using force.

You are intuitive, innovative and certainly provocative. Can you develop a bearing case for skate/longboard that takes advantage of resisting electro magnetic force for a two fold function, namely : to reduce the friction between the inner core of the casing on the bolt of the truck and produce a never ending current to keep the board moving untill a reverse polarity is applied, eliminating the nees for batteries and their exhaustive, exasperative and voracious appétit for renewed energy? The question is not wether this is possible, the question is will it be you ? I could not conceive the plans for such a "devious-vice" 🤣, only the concept, so I've certainly achieved a pride of place, it now awaits honorificabilitudinitatibus to light upon you.🧑🎓

Why in the end, are you appealing to the lock companies? You have your design concept. Find a Photoshop that will build your design in metal is it proof of concept, then start your own company! Stop appealing to these deadheads

So, why not just add a watchdog pin to a normal lock (that is not accessible from the key hole) that is made with much higher tolerances and will almost always bind first? It seems to me you already solved lockpicking with that one feature, sorta removing the need for overcomplication of the rest of the lock.

"Separating the setting from the testing". Along these lines, I have wondered if it would be possible to use serrated pins to solve the setting/testing separation problem. When you start to turn the key, there is no initial resistance at all, but the serrations slide into grooves that lock the pins into place. Only after the pins are locked in place is any testing performed with some additional rotation. The fineness of the serrations and mating grooves would limit the number of possible key cuts, though.

Unpickable locks are a great project and thought process. But I think you overstate the problem with locks as they exist now for ordinary people. Virtually no forced entries are done by lockpicking because developing those skills and engaging in petty crime are more or less mutually exclusive endeavours. Destructive attacks are quick and therefore lower risk. They may make a bit of noise, but it's nothing compared to an amateur fiddling with a lock for several minutes.

I enjoy locksport and I like the idea behind your lock. It would be a challenge to pick and wouldn't be difficult to make in brass either. That said, locks are not the weak point 99% of the time. Most criminals will just break a window, kick in the door, or move on. Rarely is picking used in a crime.
