For those people who are saying "he has to learn English", are you sure if you happened to became very famous in a foreign country whose language is totally different from your native language, and if you were getting serious media interviews, don't you want to use a decent interpreter who can handle media interviews so well, not missing out your words, won't damage your public image? I would want to use one and focus on my work.

Well, I see your point that he’s in the States for the sport and his skills speak for themselves. Body gestures might have been enough with his career in the past. However, his team might need him for English communication, sometimes. That’s something the fans could consider. US has no official language but it’s evident that knowing some English is necessary here. Munenori Kawasaki is a fine example of working hard at English without a translator in the game.

Well no it's not an absolute _must_, but it is not inconsequential either. You are at a setback in America without speaking English. Obviously he grew up in a different country and all that, so we can't fairly expect him to be able to speak English. But he is at a bit of a setback for his brand to not be able to do things like interviews and commercials in English. And especially quality of life while in the US. You can be the richest person in the world and if you only speak Japanese, that is going to significantly limit the number of people you can interact with in the US. Same goes for everywhere. If I was in a non-English speaking country where not many people spoke English, I would be making it a huge priority to learn the native language.

As a Japanese native and ESL, I totally understand why Shohei still needs interpreter. Interviews get way too technical with baseball terminologies and vague nuances. Ippei really does PERFECT job interpreting everything Shohei says... PERFECTLY forreal. Besides, he came here to play baseball, not study English. Seems like he did learn some basic conversational English thou, which is great for i say day to day living and team building with mates. Edit: I’m just gonna say I am super disappointed by everything happening right now between Ippei and Shohei. I believe in Shohei’s statement since Ippei was more than just interpreter.
