Having just done this for a V60 as the house is wuthoit power at the moment, it definitely took me under 5 minutes to get a decent grind, but equally the result tasted a little weak and watery in comparison. Looking at the bed after brewing, I know I should have ground a but more, but it probably wasn't far off. I have a large volcanic stone molcajete, so the grinding surface is quite a bit enlarged. Breaking the beans down to a groudn considtency is quick, getting it fine enough is what takes the effort. I think probably not something most would do for espresso, but for other brewing methods it may not be a lot worse than some hand grinders. Nonetheless, I hope they soon manage to restore power!

Youre using a crappy, crappy mortar and pestle. Wooden handle? Plastic cup? What? Mine is stone/marble, very rough, traditional style. You also definitely want a bigger one. This is a huge problem dude. You could have done a lot better with proper equipment but now youre spreading this experience as what its like. And then you used that crappy mortar and pestle for an espresso?!?!?!! You had an oppurtunity to make arab coffee you UGGGHHH White people.

technique is everything, for starters: portioning smaller batches is 10x faster than an even slightly too big amount, it will not catch. Speaking of catching, you should start by bashing the beans under a rag, so they dont fly away, until all pieces are small enough to catch while grinding, if you start grinding too soon, the smaller pieces willl grind to dust by the time you even catch the bigger pieces. it takes some time to get a feel for it, but this thing funnily enough has more precision and control than even the most expensive espresso grinder. edit: forgot to add, pressure also dictates how fine particles get, if you lay of the pressure you can even out particle size and lastly if you can't get the hang of it, just get the big parts out, grind them up and when it's more even, mix and continue

grind it up in a regular grinder on fine, then use the Mortar and Pestle to pulverize what's left.

why not get a cheap hand grinder like the Hario mini, then use the pestle and mortar to make it finer? At least it won't cost an arm and a leg

@@tomyeeeeeeep I use a very large granite mortar though so your results may vary. Doesn't take much time to grind.

If the grind is uneven, I just use a sieve and regrind the topmost larger grain fraction until it's fine enough. Works rather well if you're trying to avoid fully powdering that which you're grinding.

a good mortar/pestle and good technique make all the difference. that doesn't look like a very good mortar at all, and the technique is just non-existent. its a great start but with some work you can get espresso-grade coffee in 5-10 minutes

I would recommend you a wheel mortar or yagen it is easier to use and you can impart more strength into it

I can confirm this works. Yeah I find you need to go as slow as possible and it will grind more efficiently. You need a drill that can go a slower speed. It makes what would take over 5 mins of boring hand grinding take 1-2 mins. Plus everyone will think you are crazy.
