My father's Navy CB unit ( 20TH NCB) was posted on Muyrua, ( Woodland Island, Guasopa Harbor, Papua New Guinea) from July 1942 to early 1943. There was a PT moorage on a small island in the harbor, and he was tasked to help repair a PT with a work gang. They finished the work, and dad was given a hi speed cruise on the craft, generating what he called a " rooster tail" of water. That was one of his pleasant experiences, few indeed in those dark days early in WW2 in the Southwest Pacific Theatre.

Hi Chris! Yes all true, however, we don't run it at full speed every where that we go! Cruising speed of 23 knots only uses 200 gallons per hour on all 3 engines. Also we can run the boat on 2 engines or even just 1 (but it moves only 14 knots on 1 engine). Also TBH we very rarely take her up to top speed because of her age and the greatly increased wear and tear on this irreplaceable historic treasure.

Jerry, why didn't they use Detroit Diesels? Packards were great engines, but it seems to me the Detroits would have been a safer choice, given the fuel used. on edit: Nevermind, horsepower......I forgot the Detroits didn't have turbos at that time.
@wilburfinnigan2142
Жыл бұрын
American jeeper... the Detroit diesel back then were 6-71, which means 6 cylinders of 71 cu inch displacement or 426 cu in compared to 2500 for the packards so it would take 5.8 diesels to equal ONE M2500 or 17.4 Detroit 6-71 engines to equal the 3 Packards !!!!! DUUUUH!!!!

I’ve had the privilege of piloting PT-658 from the Main north south rail bridge over the willamette, under the StJohns bridge, back to the Vigor dock. Also spent 15 minutes down in the engine space while under power. Truly an awesome experience, the brave men the took these into action against the Royal Imperial Navy are to be revered. I’ll never forget, the smell of burning AV gas and wind in my face.

I had a wonderful experience experience with this boat when it was at the Portland Waterfront I was alongside it when it started that is it would have been if I had filmed it to get scared and wet from this amazingly powerful engine it's short water out the side and like backfired or something made a gosh awful noise I noticed there is a pipe that goes to the side I think that's the thing that shot the water out the side I think it's port side or to the right side of the boat they were giving rides it was there for the Portland Rose Festival Fleet Week a decade ago

I heard some people talking about being careful to not hit the ridders Thant makes me winder and think that there might not bae one or more divers? I hope there were divers or underwater cameras to see what is going on at the very least. Do you (Jerry Gilmartin) know one way or the other? Please share any thing you know or think I am interested to learn more about this process Thank You for making and sharing this 2 part video I know I am going to learn a lot.

No we did not use Divers. We had marked the cradle and the boat with alignment marks and knew how far below the boat to hang the cradle using these marks. But it was still something to be vigilant about! Thanks for the question.

Mike Berbee Christ man have you read ANY of the comments in this section ???? That question has been answered 20 ties and it is still the same answer !!! NO NO NO HELL NO !!!! The PT boat engines are PACKARD M2500 and that is their cu in displacement designed and purpose built for the US Navy and started delivery in 1938 !!! The begging Brits came hat in hand in 1940 BEGGING Packard to build the merlin, because the Brits had already received the Packard M2500's for their MTB boats,, Packard built 14,000 of the M2500's and 55,525 of the Merlins in WW II !!! YES Packard built both for two different purposes !!!! Thats why the M2500 valve covers say PACKARD and the Packard Merlins valve covers are blank !! do some research before runnin your mouth !!!
