This video is mostly correct but very, very sloppy. 0:20 AND 5:19 The Dutch empire map is one of those maps that shows every place that the Dutch have ever controlled. Most of the territory shown (especially in Indonesia) would not be conquered until after the golden age. And less than 50% of what is shows was ever held at the same time. 1:00 The map used for the Spanish empire is also wrong. Spain did not control just the Netherlands, they controlled almost all of the Low Countries. They did not control just naples, but all of southern Italy, sicily and sardinia. They did not just control Milan, but most of the surrounding region. It also does not show Spanish control of Portugal nor the region of Franche-Comté on the border between modern day France and Germany. Do not use modern day maps in these types of situations. 1:42 That is not an accurate map of religions, and "reformation, 16th century" Is not a way to describe what the map shows. It is incorrect in showing what the local population of these areas believed, and it also incorrectly shows what the rulers of these areas believed. So what is that map even showing? 8:08 This is the third flag you have used for England in 1 minute. The other two kind of make sense, but this one is from 1801, which is 129 years after the year you are discussing here, plus the outline is from the UK post 1921. Same with the French flag, you have already used other french flags, so why suddenly switch to this one that was used only after 1794? Plus the French outline is once again wrong for the period, while you used the correct one not even a few minutes prior. 8:28 The map used for the French Occupation in het Rampjaar is also flat out wrong. Modern day Belgium was not under French control, nor was the modern day German territory that was shown on the map. You just colored everything blue that wasn't controlled by the Dutch. 9:38 That is not the Cape colony, that is the dominion of South Africa with borders from 1915 to 1990. 9:57 This makes it all sound like it was a part of the WW2 peace deals, it was not. Indonesia declared indepence directly following the war, but the Dutch government would wage a war to reverse this untill 1949, when it was made to withdraw because of international pressure. PLUS, the map shows Belgium as part of the country, which hadn't been the case for over 100 years at this point. You also keep using modern day Dutch borders and the modern day Dutch flag to represent the country. Those are very much incorrect for most of the historical period you are talking about. The current flag was only flown starting in 1663, and the borders are only correct after 1968. And the minor mistakes: 0:18 and 11:53 We never were "the worlds largest superpower" the largest/most succesfull trading empire at that time? Yes. Global superpower? Absolutely not. 4:20 They were not "also known as VOC" they were the VOC, that was their actual name. Translated from Dutch it stands for United East India Company, so Dutch East India Company is the nickname here, not VOC. 4:38 The VOC wasn't "one of the first" companies to issue stocks, it was THE first. 4:55 The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is not the "oldest still existing stock exnchange", it is THE oldest. The first to ever be build. Period. 5:03 The fancy penwork around the West India Company on the left here is not part of the official logo. 8:06 During the Rampjaar, you are forgetting it was not just a war with France and England, but also the Bishoprics of Munster and Cologne. Which eplains why the French entered from the east instead of the south. 10:00 If you do not know how to pronounce words (like Suriname and Curacao), please just use the English pronunciation. Dutch words with an English accent is better than just saying them incorrectly in both languages. But that is probably a problem with the AI voice you are using. For some reason you also skipped over the other 3 islands in the carribean that are still part of the Netherlands to this day. 10:08 It is actually The Kingdom of THE Netherlands, not Kingdom of Netherlands, when including countries like Curacoa. Even in Dutch we have the extra word there and make it plural like it is in English (Koningrijk Der Nederlanden) 11:07 Rotterdam is placed on the wrong place on the map, I have no idea what city you actually hit there. You can physically see the bulge of the gigantic Rotterdam harbor on the outline of the country you are using, so there is no reason to miss that. Plus the western part of the border with Belgium is wrong here. There are also some very weird grammatical mistakes (or just weird sentences) in this video. Especially when compared to how fluent the English was in the first video from two years ago. If this channel still has the same owner as back then, please go back to narrating it yourself instead of this AI voice.

@@Withthetacetdiscords I know my comment may seem harsh, but when so many of these mistakes are made when educating others, I think they deserve to be pointed out in this way. The previous Switserland video has similar issues to this one. I know far more about Dutch history then I do Swiss history. But even there I picked up on multiple sloppy mistakes. If someone who isn't even an historian, can find that many mistakes in a relatively short period of time. How many mistakes remain unnoticed and are taken as fact by those who watch these videos? There are many channels who talk about similar topics (sometimes in an even more casual way). But who put far more work in making sure everything they tell you is correct. History Matters, Historia Civilis, Crash Course, SandRhoman History, BlueJay, Invicta and Oversimplified are great examples of that. I believe that people who don't know enough about these topics to notice that difference in quality themselves, deserve to be made aware. Because what good is an educational video if you can't trust it to be correct?

I appreciate all the feedback and criticism. I will make sure to triple check assets in future videos! However some of your points are very much nitpicking. 8:28 - The map of French occupation can be found here fully matching. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco-Dutch_War 11:07 - This is where Rotterdam is on a map, maybe half a millimeter lower. I’m not sure where you think it is.

-Surprisingly well informed for a YT video but still not without error. -The Dutch fought the Spanish for religious tolerance, also the catholics, not for protestantism. - Portugal and Spain didn't dominate trade, the vast majority of trade was still European, the Dutch just took over from nations around the North Sea and Baltic, the former Hansea. - The tulips of course had no bearing on Dutch trade, it was extravaganza, and excess of their capitalism and wealth. - No doubt they enjoyed the highest living standard of Europe, both in width and in depth - The Dutch Republic invaded Britain to turn it into an ally against France, and modernized the economy into capitalism, that was made the far bigger British population count and take over as the world's economic superpower, eventually, the Dutch were still the world's biggest traders by the late 18th century. As the first modern capitalist, the Dutch in power didn't really care whether they got more of their ROI through London than through Amsterdam. - The Dutch welfare state originated well before an gas was found. You might as well say the mortgage tax break was financed by the gas. - The Dutch disease is mostly about the currency getting expensive hurting exports of manufacture.

Appreciate the comments and some good points! We originally had a part on how William the Silent was fighting for religious freedom for all people but it got removed from the final version since we had mentioned the role of religious persecution and wanted to focus mostly on economics. While lots of the Dutch trade was done in Amsterdam and with the Baltic Sea nations, it's worth mentioning the influence and impact of the VOC and GWC/WIC on trade and Dutch colonization around the world. Thank you again for the feedback, we are working so the videos will only improve from here!

@@casual_economics It was related in the sense that the cities had been granted relative autonomy in the past and that included dealing with religion in relation to public order, but the Union of Utrecht that decided to fight the Spanish codified the freedom of conscience (of how to serve god, i.e. religious tolerance) and that was even before the declaration of independence. The taxing was a factor too but mostly because they were completely unfit to what was already a traders economy. Actually the Dutch Golden Age was already past it's first half before the VOC and WIC started returning any significant profits (1630's), and would remain tiny in comparison to the Dutch dominance of the European trade. They are worth mentioning for lots of reasons, but any economic impact not so much despite having the Dutch monopoly on all trade East of the Cape for the VOC and the Atlantic for the WIC because it was often more than a year sailing for one cargo shipment.

Neutrality during the World Wars played a big part of it. Being cut off by the mountains and having limited natural resources helped enforce Switzerland's neutrality. Norway declared itself neutral in WW2 but still got invaded since it had valuable resources the Germans needed including iron ore.

Well , three of those countries are not ( at least yet ) sovereign nations in their own right anyway since they are still under the British Crown ie: they share Britain's Monarch as Head of State . So , Australia , New Zealand and Canada along with some smaller Caribbean countries are still essentially British dominions even though politically independent , so it would make sense to have a Canzuk pact. This , however , is unfortunately the fault of the people and successive governments of the three countries that have , at least in Australia's case , obviously not felt patriotic enough to insist on their own Heads of State as a Republic within the Commonwealth , and this is not the fault of the British Monarchy or British government . At least Canada has a proper flag of their own instead of a British colonial ensign.
