I ordered this die on recommendations to use with my Big Shot Plus. It is a little wide. I am going to bring it to a local cabinet maker to trim a little off each side. If that doesn’t work out I am just out the $70 Otherwise it is worthless to me. I will make sure to keep the angle skewed. If anyone has a better idea I would love to hear it.

My rag die never cut well from the first cut. $60.00 for that die and having to use scissors is not acceptable I could have skipped buying the die . I probably will not ever use it again. Wasted my $$$

I use a hemastat to clean the bits of fabric from my dies...same manner using this. I have trained my husband to cut down my used/worn out Mats. The center is still good and I use them with my 6" dies.

I have found it is VERY IMPORTANT to place the fabric squarely on the die face do not be tempted to save fabric by cutting it the same size as the die blades that does not work the cutters are off set I assume to the fabric is cut on the Bias? I think it is important to have some waste I have found a 10 inch wide (or square) works best yes there is some fabric waste but so what it's more important to have a good cut for a good finish and any scraps can be used for stuffing in say a cushion so nothing really goes to waste. With my Rag Die enclosed was a "pick" (the sort of thing a dentist uses) to scrape fabric threads from the cutting blades

What do you mean by a "bernina quarter inch?" Is is exactly 1/4" or what?
@ellenhofer3343

twinstar9 I think she's referring to a scant 1/4". You do that on most machibes by setting up for needle position aat 1/4" and then move the needle one position to the right.

THe threads get really stuck down into the blades on any of the Accuquilt dies. Vacuuming doesn't even move them! So it's pick them out instead!

+Annelie Köster I only speak English. I agree that the quilting industry is based on the English language. The measurements are based on US measurement of units, never in metric. If I spoke a second language, I would do tutorials in that language. I try to speak slow and avoid using compound sentences. I do not use slang. I do not remember if I did that in this tutorial. I try to. I use to teach engineers from Japan and Asia so I do try the best I can be allow time for translation.

I just bought the 8 1/2 Rag die. I cut 10 Flannel squares 2 at a time as directed. I had to stop because the threads were clogged up all around the outside edge. I felt like a dentist cleaning teeth. It took an hour to pluck & pluck. I think you should tell everyone that if you use FLANNEL you will spend more time plucking at the die than you will be cutting. Also the Die which is mind you 24 hrs old looks like I had it for years. The plastic mat also is chewed up as well. I am Disappointed in this die for cutting flannel and if I had known I would not have invested in this die. :(

I'm definitely one of the late-comers to the wonders of Accuquilt die cutting. I was under the misconception that a lot of fabric was wasted using this method, so I stayed with traditional, manual cutting methods to save fabric and money. The point of all this is that I've just discovered all your Accuquilt videos, Judy; and I'm so appreciative of them! I hope you will keep them posted on KZitem for a long time to come for all the newbies to Accuquilt that are still emerging...like me! Thank you so much for taking the time to produce these :-)

I am so glad I found your video! I just finished a rag quilt and had a horrible time with the blades not cutting. I thought something was wrong with my die. I kept cleaning it and it would help a little but then it was right back to the same thing. I wondered if it could possibly be the worn mat so now before I start another rag project I will get a new mat. Thank you!

I look forward to that because I've watched all your videos, enjoyed them greatly. Those that Accuquilt puts out are totally worthless as it's virtually just mouthing the 'partyline' & no one needs that. It's the practical, on the 'hobby' trials & tribulations that create the fixes you use, that are helpful to me. I so appreciate your words, 'methods of wisdom' so, Good Luck with the move & more so, with unpacking & getting setup in new digs.

Jamb-packed with wonderful information! I was all-in while viewing your paper method (love it, will do it) & dealing with prefused fabrics makes such sense! At some point, it would be great if you'd mention what brands you use & if there are those you skip, it's helpful also. This is not criticism, only a suggestion. In future videos, when showing something on the die or marks you've added, I'll be able to see it if you put your hands toward the camera. Again, thanks for filling this need of 'real deal' use of Accuquilt dies!

For me, I think I'd rather skip making these than deal with using needle-nose pliers to pick. That's just gross in my book. I'd rather use rotary cutter but just in case that is more difficulty, I'll skip making this kind of quilt & I thank her for offering this video. It's just as important to explain what's worth avoiding as any other point.

211ssw - I agree about videos being good to see if this is a good tool or a not so much tool. I do the same. At the time I made this video the process for these types of quilts was to sew first, cut second. For many, me included, cutting that much with scissors is not an option. But what these pre-cut rag squares show is that they are as easy to sew together after they are cut as they are before. Cutting with the rotary cutter is now a very good option. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the helpful advice on the pliers. I went to the toolbox and got out our plier set. We actually had a pair that had a bent angle on the tip. It worked great to come in from the top at the end of the fringes. Phew it takes a little while to clean these out though. I had been cutting out jean squares and the denim really tended to get stuck in there.

Hi Judy! Thanks so much for posting this video. It's really helpful and now I feel more confident about using this die. I've had it for over a year and haven't used it yet! I have a general question about AccuQuilt dies that I can't seem to learn the answer to anywhere....why are these dies slightly "tilted" to one side? It seems counter-intuitive not to lay the fabric out in a straight line on the die casing. Why are the die patterns slightly askew? Thanks again for your post.

+Seattle1951 --Hi Seattle, I'm originally from Tacoma. Anyway, they talk about why the fabric must be skewed as it enters the roller area on the Accuquilt website. As I recall it's because it prevents the fabric from scooching when enters at an angle . If enters blunt edge, there's a greater chance for it to bunch up. You can find the answer for sure on the website for Accuquilt. Anne in South Texas.

CLEANING THE DIE - if you can't see how I am cleaning the die at the end of the video, go to full screen. On my computer anyway, and bit of the top part of the video is cut off. Full screen shows the entire video. For most of this video, that's no big deal, but when I show how to clean, that's all at the top where it's cut off.

I sew just inside the ends of the fringe cut. I measure it under the needle, then use masking tape or some sort of seam guide for sewing the entire quilt. Yep, the seams are 1"+ to do that, but if you sew within the fringe, you will have holes in your quilt at the seams. The batting cut for this block is 6"x6". and the seams should be just along the edge of the batting squares. That's another way to figure out where to sew. Hope this helps!

Blades and scissors being dulled by cutting paper is mostly a myth. The reason fabric only scissors don't seem to dull as quickly is because they aren't used as much. Fabric dulls scissors and blades just as quickly as paper with the exception of thicker papers that use a lot of chemical in them to make them stiff.
@KevKevAllen
13 жыл бұрын
You've done any amazing job at creating this block, but those dies are like scissors, don't EVER use your fabric scissors for paper. The same goes for dies, don't use your dies for paper. It dulls the blades faster, if you need to get your fabric to not stretch, tilt your die as it goes into the machine so that it goes in at an angle. And/or starch your fabric, LIGHTLY starch your fabric.

I really appreciate that you're willing to share your experience. I would guess the mats might be able to be sanded lightly with a vibration sander & a very find sandpaper. Than add a couple of layers of paper to make up for the lost thickness. I will try when mine wears out & let you know. Also I loved your suggestion to use the rag mat with appliques that just cut the center of the mat, perfect combo. Thanks

I haven't used a rag die yet. How many cuts do you get from the rag die before you need to clean it? How many cuts before you had to replace the mat? Last Q: How many layers would you cut in each pass thru? Thanks so much.
@lindagursslin4212

I cut 2 layers of flannel and only 1 layer of Denim with mine. I found I had to replace the mat after about 6 months...but it all depends on how much you use it. If it looks worn out, get a new one! My hubby has a saw that cuts my worn out mats down to 6"-7" squares to use on my applique and 6" dies.
