I remember the first time I dug into my Gl1000 that had been sitting for 20 years. It was "an easy project" when it was sitting on the shelf in my parents shed. Next thing you know, it's 2 AM and I'm up looking at dirty things on the internet (colored wiring diagrams), and searching for brake system info. I hope your project has turned out well and that you didn't get lost down the rabbit hole!

Follow your bliss man....The "Wing" is so under appreciated....American built Japanese, lowest center of gravity, even the kick starter is novel and rugged....Hope to see you out and about in PDX......Great work!

Ho Hum I,v had my project in my shed for about 10yrs,, It will be my first restoration (not a full restoration, just a sort of get it going and tidy it up),my bike is a 75 GL ,I,v already made my first misstake.. I decided to change the bars,,, Mine came with British style bars which are flat, for me that was rubbish so I got some raised bars...But I destroyed the switch gear trying to dissemble,,ended up having to cut the wires and the old bars off... Doing that kindof knocked my confidence,,so its sat for another 5 yrs... But with the help of YT I,m building up for another go in the new year,,,,Keep on wrenching !

Your bike has been one of my favorites that I've seen online (so much so I took a screen shot of it and then forgot where I got the image of. I'll make sure to give you credit in the description.).You did a great job on it. I'm hoping to start working on mine again in the next few weeks and see if I can get it to fire up. Thanks again.

@@paulelmore8364 No worries! It was a fun project, I'm glad someone else likes it too. I was actually surprised to see it. Enjoy your project, and good luck with your build. Some of the parts are getting harder to find. I can't wait to see the finished product, please post a video.

I highly recommend Randakk's Cycle Shack's website for tips on servicing these. My first bike is a 78 GL. Still have it. Very comfortable, super advanced for the time. Would love to have a higher final drive/freeway gears. It does sit at 4700-5000 doing 80ish. Kinda chews through fuel at that speed. The goldwing is so comfortable, so well behaved, I wanted a bike I could cut my teeth on customizing and making it my own but once I got it roadworthy I began to love it so much for what it is. I bought a cheap sporty for effin around with. I like what you're doing with it. DIY upholstery is not easy. Especially working with 40ish yr old foam. Not bad for a first stab at it.

Thanks for the recomnmendation on Randakk's Cycle Shack. I need all the help I can get. I'm hoping to get it up and running in the next few weeks after a LONG break while helping my son rebuild his old BMW.

Hi Paul. Great video. Don't know if you realized, but that is not a 1975 GL1000 gauge cluster or body panels. Those gauges and body panels are from a 1977 GL1000. Still a nice machine. Good Luck !!

I dig it. Sew in a metal rod on seat cover . Then tie the rod to the seat pan. That should remedy the lose vinyl.

Hello. Sooooo sorry for the super late reply to your question. Yes, they are 7/8" bars. I wish I could tell you when I found them online, but I really have no idea. It did take me a while to find them. Here's one source I just looked up... bit.ly/3JOU0pP

Cracks me up. Do all that work to it and spray it with a rattle can. If you can spray that tank with a can you can buy a cheap spray gun some decent paint and make a nice job. When the first bit of gas drips on that from filling tank it's ruined not to mention how easy rattle can scratches. If it were a metal tank you could powder coat it then you would have a better finish and more durable for less than 250 dollars

Thank you Paul, Did you then use more acetone to rinse it clean, use something else, or just leave it be? Also, if you don't mind, what did you use to remove or neutralize whichever you used to rinse it out? Thanks again, Jim.
