That's gorgeous leather...but hard physical work. The fleshing especially looks and unpleasant job.. and also skilled, so as not to damage the skin. ..ditto the de-hairing. But the finished product looks beautiful.

Does the tree bark matter if it is pulled of a downed dead tree in the woods or must it be removed in strips from a live standing tree?
9 ай бұрын
If the tree has been dead and exposed to rain for a long time the tannins will leach out. Fresh bark is better and often easier to shred.

Hey, man. I just want you to know that I've now tanned 12 goatskins and currently have a couple of asiatic buffalo skins tanning in a Mimosa and Acacia brew. I've come up with a softening system. It consistes of 2 octagons made of plywood with 3/4" steel ball bearings (they don't have to be hard just smooth). They're off center and really beat the crap put of the leather. Rollers.

This is great. Thanks for the demo! You have really inspired me. Someone mentioned about odours and I found another YT vid about purifying the fat to remove those odours. They say start with the fat from around the animal's kidneys, chop it up, then food-process it down to lumps and low and slow cook it with 3 tablespoons of salt and 750ml of water (guessing about 4 hrs till most of the fat lumps become liquid)- some lumps will not change. Let the stuff cool in a bowl that flexes then pop out the fat upside down. You get the 'impurities' at the bottom. scrap em off. Chop up your somewhat clean fat and return to heat along with same 3tblspoons salt and 750ml water and slow cook for about an hour. Chuck it in the bowl again, cool off, look underneath, impurities much smaller and you are left with pure white fat for now a wide range of uses! Mostly suited for lovely white candles and as an ingredient in home made moisturizer.

Would you be able to tell us what might be the best options when trying to tan hides the oldest fashion way possible? Like if modern soaps weren't available? I've seen some videos in the past about during a soaking process, someone used fats and brains to treat the leather, but even in vids about ancient aboriginal methods, they suddenly use modern dish or laundry soaps, and that's really baffling, because clearly those wouldn't have been available hundreds or a thousand years ago. For context, I'm trying to do research for dark ages methods of tanning from start to finish, if even just the basics. lol

Brain! Just brain, (either the own animals or from a butcher) with a little water into a slurry; warm and apply. Break hide as here, as it dries then smoke it. That's how it was done pre soap/soy lecithin/egg
What are some high tannin barks common in Australia?

step 10 is the long hard work. I usually keep the hide off the stretcher when I do this step. Use trees and poles and a lot of elbow grease, pulling, tugging and scrapping across trees and poles. But can be very worth it in the end.

im a bit confused. what happens if you skip the smoking and just wash out the solution? i just "discovered" that the fat itself would tan the hide by oxidizing, so is the smoking actually necessary? thank you for the video.
@DieLuftwaffel
2 жыл бұрын
You may already have an answer by now, but smoking makes leather become water resistant (not water proof) and can also make it last longer and possibly be less appealing to insects.
