It sounds amazing, I know tools sound in general is not an easy one to re create but your doing a hell of a good job I haven't heard anyone get that close especially with limited resources. if you ever need a bassist for tool just let me know

How do you count this? Please
@cassiodrummer
Ай бұрын
I'll be fully honest, I've been playing this song for long enough that it's just a feel thing rather than counting now. When I learned it, I did count using mainly different combinations of 6/8, 5/8, and 3/8 and slowed it down a ton, but now I know the song and the rhythm so well that I don't have to think about it much and actually improvise a lot of the time. My best recommendation would be trying to find sheet music and just listening to the bass part rhythm until you could sing it back with the right rhythm without having to count, and if you can do that then hopefully playing to those same rhythms will feel much more natural. Hope that helps!

Realise I´m late to this, but I also have that same Wavedrum and I can´t get it to recreate the sound you´re getting here. Any advice how you´d get that sound on it?

Awesome performance man. Since you are playing on an electronic kit you might want to look into the methods it offers to record your playing. In many cases these kits can connect directly to your pc. This enables tons of options when combined with some recording software (Which can be expensive, but I'm pretty sure some very good freeware is not difficult too find). If you load the drumless track into this recording software and make it play and record your drums as a separate track, you will end up with your playing synced to what you are actually hearing in your headphones. In most cases this is cheaper than investing in microphones, and (opinions may differ) could offer better quality as you would be monitoring the signal from your kit directly instead of indirectly with the mic (where positioning and acoustics will influence quality of result signal) Maybe you already know this, or even know better what you want than me, and this isn't of use to you. I just read your description and thought maybe it would help you save a few bucks.

Oh thanks! I actually already ended up getting a mic set for as cheap as I could and it sounds pretty decent! I have an old 8 channel mixer that I can use for recording (and then getting those tracks on my computer for further mixing once I get a DAW, which I’ve found some free ones that might work for now). For the electronic drum I use I can get a direct out into one of the line inputs on the mixer which is great as well, but I’ll have a bit more trouble shooting to do once I get some midi electronic drums. Luckily I’m only in highschool and can use a lot of the money I make working part time for this gear though cause you’re totally right, it adds up fast!

wow, great job! you seem to switch between open-handed style, and regular? like, you play the hi-hat using left hand, but then you do the ride and the pad/tabla patterns with the right. that is seriously difficult, and a rare feat, but looks all fluent and natural for you. mad respect.

Check out Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra) for a brilliant drummer playing open-handed. He is one of Danny Carey's sources of inspiration for sure.

@@hashbashI’ll check him out! I’ve heard his name mentioned for sure. And as far as my open-handed playing goes, I got to give credit to my dad for that. He’s a left handed drummer and open handed playing seemed like more practical than a full lefty setup (especially if he ever wanted to play on anyone else’s kit) so he got me to try it out too. I sometimes switch to cross over when I play with my schools jazz band but I love being able to play open for my kit at home!

Please don't ever quit playing drums. You are seriously talented and could become a successful musician as long as you keep at it. I gave up after high school due to logistical reasons and have regretted it ever since. That was 20 years ago. I still play today and am decent, but I've lost most of my chops and never invested the time I needed to grow and improve. Don't be me! You and your band members are all talented. Keep playing.

Hell yeah, dude, i also learned this song a few years ago when i was 16 or 17. It's super challenging, but it really helped me get better at really feeling odd time signatures. I can play in 5/8 or 7/8, almost as easily as 4/4, partiality thanks to this song. Are you a lefty? Open handed on a right handed kit setup is exactly how i play lol
@cassiodrummer
4 ай бұрын
Yeah I’ve done a lot of odd time signature practice as well! Me and some friends have had some fun improv jam sessions where we improvise in 5/8 or 7/8 and I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with feeling those time signatures. And as far as my open handed playing- I think I’m partially ambidextrous. I started playing cross handed but my dad (a left handed drummer) encouraged me to try open handed and I love it now!
