Almost all spacecraft (both in fiction and in real life) are pusher designs. Metal alloys are much stronger for tension than for compression, so a puller/tractor design is more structurally efficient, meaning that much less mass is used up by structural components. The ISV is such a clever design. Hats off to the designers. However, I found it a bit far fetched the ISV hover maneuver. The F-35 and the Harrier, tiny in comparisson, can carve large holes on unpaved ground, let alone a mile-long rocket. The exhaust would certanly carve an enormous crater, destroying the surface for the cargo to land. Furthermore, an atmospheric (re)entry would be difficult for such large non-aerodynamic vehicle. I think they should have kept the shuttles of the first movie.

My question is how come the atreides use a different harvester and how were they able to produce harvesters so fast despite the harkonnens having controlled arrakis for 80 years. So harkonnens carried all their harvesters back to geidi prime despite it having no purpose there. They wasted money for transporting those.

Fremen likely do it by hand, or using hand-held tools. They don't need to harvest spice to fuel an entire Imperium, just enough for their own needs for each tribe's sietch and to pay off the Spacing Guild, so they likely don't need the huge harvesters and carryall systems. Additionally, Fremen work in harmony with the land and the sandworm. They can walk without attracting its attention, and their awareness of the sandworm's lifecycle and general way of doing things would likely make them privy to fresh spice-blows that off-worlders would likely only find days (if not weeks) later. tldr; they do it by hand, they don't need as much as the Imperium does so they harvest less, and their knowledge of Dune gives them prime spice locations.

My question is why is there a square harvester used by the Atredies? In part 1 I was under the impression the Harkonnen left ALL their equipment behind for spice. It was implied in the movie and book that what they left was sabotaged. In part 2 the Harkonnen have their own unique design like a beetle (accurate to the books). I guess I’m asking why is there a square looking harvester at all? Did the Atredies already have a spice harvester design despite only getting access to Arrakis like 3 days before? Am I overthinking this lol
@creativelibertiesweretaken3366
Ай бұрын
You’ve got it mixed up. House Harkonnen left almost NONE of their equipment behind, save for a few of old, outdated models. House Atriedes did not have any harvesters of their own and had to make do with what was left. When Harkonnen left, they took the good spice harvesters with them (I believe there’s a shot showing some of them getting airlifted away). In part 2, when House Harkonnen returns to arakkis, they bring all their spice harvesters back again.

So what is Spice actually? Is it like currency in the olden Roman days where they used salt as currency?
@themcubed
Ай бұрын
In the Dune universe Spice is a halucinagetic drug-like chemical that enables some human psychic abilities and extendeds human life. When used in extreme quantities it gives the user enough psychic power to calculate how to fold space and navigate ships between the stars. Without spice FTL travel is impossible. It is only found in the sand of the desert planet of Arakis.
@1597B

Something like that. It's worth a ton of money, and being the only way to travel space basically puts Spice in a category of it's own. Having a good amount of it is equivalent of holding millions of dollars, since you'd be able to trade it somewhere.

My theory is that he'd gain too much wealth from controlling the spice trade. And too much wealth meant too much power. Power which was already limited by the Landsraad, the congress made up by the great houses, meant to check on the Emperor's influence over space politics. They also probably can't allow two or several other houses to share their ownership of Arrakis due to the constant plotting and wars going on between them all. Peace must be maintained on Arrakis at all cost if they want the spice to keep flowing...

in the books the harversters of the harkonnen are never described, we only get a descrption when leto goes to watch one in function, and they are described as looking like giant bugs with legs like these, so that's the main inspiration, but Denis really changed it up because he made the advanced version used by the harkonnens similar to what is in the books and since in the books too it happens that the harkonnens leave behind only old and poorly manteind machinery, he made the old machined look different, with this boxy legless design

Two huge problems I have with dune movies tech. 1. the mining laser beams seem like better weapons than anything else. 2. they have anti gravity tech in there suits. Why not a floating spice harvester? why balloons at all?
@danielsong9365
Ай бұрын
1. lasguns, when hitting shielded targets, cause a chain reaction equivalent to an atomic weapon. it would destroy the individual/thing wearing the shield and it would also kill the person who fired it. that’s why they’re used sparingly, and the harkonnen guy in the beginning says “no shields!” (also cuz shields make worms mad) 2. not sure too much why they have to be lifted up, but it’s probably something to do with the size. humans are probably fine, but maybe ships/crawlers are too heavy and unstable to be lifted by anti gravity tech (or maybe since it also uses holtzmann technology the vibrations could attract worms as well, similar to shields) so in conclusions, lasguns can blow everything up if shot at a shield, and maybe holtzmann anti gravity thingies attract worms
@georgeofhamilton

It’s probably needlessly costly to attach floating machines to harvesters. Balloon carryalls work fine as long as they’re maintained.
@magonus195
Ай бұрын
This is probably like asking "Why don't all airplanes have vertical takeoff/landing, if Harrier Jump Jets have existed since 1967? And why doesn't everybody in 2024 have commercially-available flying cars like Harriers too?"
@magonus195
Ай бұрын
Also the real-world reason that there aren't more commercial balloons is that the Hindenburg spooked everyone, even though balloons are comparatively _very_ energy-efficient aircraft. Unfortunately, helium (not hydrogen) is the best chemical to use for giant flying balloons, and the US monopolized it at the time of the Hindenburg, and still produces a majority to this day. There's probably some artificial reasons, like the oil industry. "If X exists, why don't all use X?" is as silly a question, as asking you yourself don't have 10 PHDs, since the internet exists.

One flaw with your video is that the ship flips. During the flip the ship is not shielded from interstellar dust and a single dust grain at 0.7c can destroy it. A more likely scenario is that the ship always faces forward and has the solar sail deploy behind it. In addition the antimatter rockets can fire both directions. They fire forwards slightly angled to decelerate and can while fire backwards to accelerate. This would make a more reasonable design without ever needing to flip the ship
@artworkdt2077
2 ай бұрын
Exactly. And in addition, at the beginning of the trip, interstellar dust can also destroy the sail when it is facing forward, that sail is extremely fragile. I think a few points need to be adjusted to make this journey more logical.
@Imagine_Beyond

@artworkdt2077 Yes, the flight shown in the video has a few flaws, but there are solutions for them. Hopefully if we actually do travel to other stars, they pre plan it correctly. I don’t want to be hearing "oops" from the stellar engineer while the interstellar ship is blown to pieces because of dust hitting it at relativistic velocities
