I only do public speaking if I’m talking about something I know about. I don’t use a script but I will put a series of photos together in my slides which act as mental prompts. Being off script allows you to react to the audience or additional thoughts that enter your head. If there’s a particularly important line that needs to be understood by the audience, I’ll practice that line a few times just so I get it completely right. Take your time and articulate the words- part of this can be overemphasising your consonants.

My public speaking strategy includes three tactics, practicing for subject matter command, making immediate eye contact with my audience to make a few uncomfortable, and speaking confidently (commanding tone, pacing, asking questions to maintain engagement). It works. It helps that I was born with a deep voice.

I am so this guy. This issue is that he loves writing a perfect presentation, the way a script writer can write motivational speeches, but lacks the ability to memorize the speech and/or lacks the ability to maintain that same level of confidence if/when there’s a fumble in the recitation. If the stars align, then he and I can perform the best con job of a “no notes” public speech, but I never take that gamble. I always bring my notes with me, and he should’ve too.
@the.seagull.35

I think he practiced the intro a bunch and nailed it. But then completely forgot what happened after the intro lol. Like it just receded into the fog. This is a good lesson... prepare for the whole speech. Not just the intro. Also I think he made the mistake of trying to memorize the speech word for word, like a script. If you miss one line or forget one word it completely throws you off. Really you just have to learn about the topic, take a genuine interest in it, and then just talk about it. If you get stuck just skip ahead to the next part. It takes preparation but it sets you free from having to memorize a script.

I’m here because I’m 90% sure I fucked up a speech for my public speaking 101 course. I have severe social anxiety, and am much more afraid of public speaking than I am of anything else. I thought I was well prepared, too. My presentation outline and slides according to my prof were immaculate. But, when push came to shove and I was standing up in front of 40 peers, my mind just went blank. Fear set in. About 2/3rds of the way in my speech, I started to feel lightheaded, so I had to quit early. I thought I’d done the worst speech my prof has ever seen (even though, she assured me that I did my best and the only real issue was my time, due to me cutting it early. I guess I didn’t fuck up my speech too badly, compared to this one. Despite my intense anxiety, I knew what I was talking about. My body just didn’t want to cooperate with my mind. I wouldn’t rag on the guy so much if I hadn’t read the comments/video description detailing how much of an obnoxious narcissist he was lmao. Sounds like he thought he was the shit, but was very quickly humbled

Hey don't worry about it. I'm not an expert on mental conditions but one of the things that really helps me for presenting a speech is practice. There is nothing wrong with having a speech memorized either sentence to sentence or word to word if you put in the work to back that up. I have my own tendencies to get nervous when on stage, so what I like to do is put in a lot of practice beforehand. So much so that I instead am focused on the words I'm saying (and have said hundreds of times) rather than the audience around me. Everyone's different, but I thought I'd share my experience to help you out.

i found this video because i cant public speak at all, and wanted to find even 1 person on the internet who has it worse than i do. ive met so many people who can "relate" to me and claim they have it worse, but when they get up there, theyre not. and neither is this guy. i have those 5-10 second pauses of awkward silence with ums and nervous breaths, but when i do manage to speak, my voice is very shaky. im not a social outcast. i have friends. i have no problem doing something like yelling in a group of 100 people to embarrass one of them. but as soon as the expectation falls on me to be able to speak, i no longer can. i dont have performance anxiety anywhere outside of this. i just feel completely winded, like i just ran 1 out-of-shape mile, and i have no breath or saliva. someone study me and fix me. and video guy if youre watching, trust me u did better than i wouldve

Talk to your doctor and try propranolol. A lot of people use it for performance anxiety. It inhibits the effects of the stress hormone noradrenaline. Even though you might still feel anxious, it gets rid of the physical symptoms (Tachycardia, dry mouth, shaky voice, etc.). If the physical symptoms are gone then it's easier to focus on the task at hand because you don't give off an outward appearance of being anxious.

I stuttered and had 5-10 second breaks between each thing I said and even realized a big word on my presentation was misspelled. I also kept saying “uh” and even asked the teacher if I can restart. @@anakinlooksatc3p0withlustf50 No he was just very nervous about his presentation and didn't have any little reminders near him so he had to walk over get his paper and see the next part of that long ass speech which made him even more nervous about the whole thing. I remember one time I was on a call with my friends and said my text perfectly without missing a single word same with the few minutes before the presentation and yet when I stepped out to do the intro of our presentation I could feel my body shaking and I forgot a few words and had to improvise and make a little changes in my head in the middle of the presentation so that they would be in order and line up. Sometimes you forget the order of your speech and that's ok being in college or school it's even worse when having a room of adults staring at you instead of kids. From this guy it's expected much more during presentations and the fact that he is doing this project alone is just more pressure and more stress.
