Thank you for your thoughts. They are very inspiring. I am retired 10 years after a very rewarding 42 year career as a medical technologist. I worked in a very small hospital lab, in an isolated part of California. My career spanned through testing that was all manual testing, , to mostly automated technology. It was a great experience to go through the transition.

ppl in this field, can u pleaseee help me??🙏 I'm thinking of going into this field, but I'm hesitant about a few things, do u feel satisfaction just from working in this field (and generally helping ppl)? Or do u also analys results and find serious sicknesses etc' that give u satisfaction? And, if I go into this field will I have to deal with all kinds of body parts? Or do some labs deal only with blood samples for example?? Thank u so much!!

Based on my degree requirements for medical laboratory science, you definitely need chemistry and different kinds of biology, but not physics.

job security. no. technology is moving so fast. robots will be doing this work in 30 years. The nurses, however, I presume, will remain in demand.

Blake Clearly. But they can do over 80% of the work that a person can do. that means fewer clinical lab jobs.

This job won't be replaced by robots because there needs to be a human who makes sure the samples are tested correctly. A lot of things are automated, but the human is still needed and required.

Medical laboratory technician = 2 years undergrad studying biochemistry/microbiology or related + 1 year medical laboratory technologist program. Pay is around $40-$50k/year. Medical laboratory scientist aka clinical laboratory is scientist = 4 years undergrad studying microbiology or related + 1 year in an MLT program. Pay is $60k-$80k.

There are several names for the bachelors program: MT, CLT, CLS. Same education 4-5 years. Then the MLT in the US is an associate program of 2 years. The 4 year programs are "technologists." The 2 year programs are "technicians." After completing the 2 yr. program, you can go back and convert to the 4 yr. program by returning to school and pass the registry exam for the 4 yr. program, which will require a few years of lab experience as an MLT on the job, similar to 2 yr vs. 4 yr. RN transition programs.

Is the job outlook on this good? I don't want to be one of those people who get a degree and is out of work for like 2 years with student loans because the job market is too flooded.

ryan bambino Job outlook in US is good. Baby boomers are getting older and out of the field and into the hospitals as patients, and those empty spots need to be filled. Most hospitals are always hiring.

I'm at odds with this. I enjoy the idea of medicine, I like the concept of pathology and practical applied testing research and analysis etc... bu the thing is.. I don't like chemistry the lab environment or working with chemistry related equipment. So that's kinda a clash.

+Decade Same problem, try looking for something else though or if you really think that you would like the majority of it you can try to find a way to tolerate it. I would say a dietician but that doesn't pay much unless you set up more outlets and ways to earn more
