Apparently all liner block the sewage pipes and do not biodegrade as advertised. If you put one in water and wait or stick it through the washing machine you will see if they do or dissolve.

The lanolin and urine does not make soap. It makes water. The lanolin brings down the ph level of the urine turning it into water and salt and then the water evaporates.

Thank you very much for making these videos. I love how calm and thorough you are with your knowledge. The only thing I do not understand. is. with a pocket diaper, do you change the entire diaper each time? Or can you lay the liner on baby and just change the liner every other time still using the same cover piece? I know you can do that with the prefold and covers right?
@JaimeeGleisner
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandy, because the pocket diaper is coming into contact with pee/poop, it is necessary to change the entire diaper at each change. The advantage to the pocket diaper is more thorough washing/rinsing and quicker drying than with an all-in-one and better wicking qualities than a prefold, contour, or all-in-two. With a prefold/cover system, yes, you can reuse the cover as long as it is not wet or soiled. Spot clean soiled areas as possible, lay out to air dry between changes as necessary and reuse. Wash covers if they are too dirty or start to smell.

In one of your videos in this seminar, you mentioned that polar fleece was NOT good for absorbing/wicking but it appears that the material in the fuzzibuns one-size pocket diapers is polar fleece. www.fuzzibunz.com/collections/all-fuzzibunz-diapers/products/fuzzibunz-one-size-diapers?variant=48261463955 My baby girl is very prone to diaper rash and I am trying to decide between the bumgenius pocket diapers and fuzzibuns, but fuzzibuns is cheaper (at least right now... they are on sale for $13.95 a diaper). However if the polar fleece will cause problems I'd rather pay more. Can you provide more insight? Thank you.
@JaimeeGleisner
7 жыл бұрын
The microfleece (different than polar fleece) in FuzziBunz is very good for wicking as is the fiber cloth in BumGenius. I'm not sure that you would find a difference between the wicking abilities of these two diaper brands. Premium diapers are the best at wicking out of all the diaper options. So it is always my recommendation to buy a variety of diapers to try at first and then stock up on what works the best. Maybe grab a few FB's while they are on sale and pick up one BG and compare them. ** The following is NOT to replace medical advice. ** Diaper rash can be tricky to solve. Is she experiencing it in cloth diapers now? Or in disposables? If the former, there are many other things could be causing the problems beside the fabric type. Detergent type, detergent build up, cream residue, rinsing routine, allergy to synthetic fabrics, etc. If she's rashing in disposables frequently then I might look at your wipes for issues- is she too wet from the wipes? You can actually use a blow dryer on its lowest setting to help dry her off prior to putting the diaper back on (or just air dry whenever possible). I might focus more on the type of rash, too... is it moisture rash? Or a recurrent yeast infection? The latter may require medication. Or is it an allergy rash? In which case you may have to look at possible food sensitivities. I know this can be very frustrating! Good luck.

@JaimeeGleisner

In the olden days, cloth diapers were hand washed and this is an option, but would be a LOT of work. I am hesitant to recommend something that would be so labor intensive as it could deter you from cloth diapering altogether. I think without the spin cycle and rigorous wash cycles of a machine, you would likely need to pay more attention to sanitizing with soaking in enzymes or bleach (if you're comfortable with that).

+rochelle123ist Then go for the hybrids! Using an Earth friendly disposable liner or disposable diaper is certainly better than using regular disposables. However, I highly encourage you to give cloth a try before ruling it out. Try out a variety of diapers- including the hybrids and see what you think before making a final decision. So many parents feel like cloth is overwhelming at first, but once they settle into a routine, realize that it's not difficult and there are so many benefits. Much about having a newborn is overwhelming, so even if you can't do cloth at the start, that doesn't mean that you can't switch to cloth a month later or two months later or whenever you feel like you're able to invest some time to giving it a try. It's so worth it! Good luck!

I have doublers that I bought, but haven't used. I did a pocket diaper with a doubler and he leaked everywhere. I'm going to try again soon now that he's not peeing in his sleep as much. But the urine smell is so strong , even after just 1 day

For the all in one diapers, the down side is you are washing the whole thing every time it is soiled, where as if you are using the pre-fold you only wash the cover every other time or so, correct?
@JaimeeGleisner
9 жыл бұрын
+arimeis That's correct. The all-in-ones (AIO) are more difficult to thoroughly wash/rinse and take longer to dry plus they are more expensive. Prefolds and covers allow you to reuse the same 3 (or so) covers throughout the day and only wash them when they get soiled or start to smell. So you get away with purchasing less of the more expensive covers and more of the less expensive prefolds. But they do need to be changed more often and take a bit more effort to get on baby. :)

"the feces of infants is full of viruses. Especially vaccinated infants." I'd very much like to see your source on that. Although I love the videos and how much info you're giving the viewer on the different types of cloth diapers (which I personally need), it seems to me that's just information you're putting in the video to try and get more people to not vaccinate their children. (which, btw, is the real reason we have random outbreaks of things like the Measles)
@JaimeeGleisner
9 жыл бұрын
+FoxLightstep Human feces contain bacteria and can contain viruses when the individual is ill. I am not encouraging vaccinating or non-vaccinating in anyway. It is, however, known that several vaccines shed for a couple of weeks. It is important to keep all these things in mind when dealing with poop and taking proper steps such as washing hands well and disposing of the poop properly to prevent the spread of diseases/illnesses.
@FoxLightstep
9 жыл бұрын
Feces is the excrement from what was not digested. When a human is shedding anything from the body, it's through the urine or breathing. Although I do agree it happens. That's where proper hygiene comes in to play. I was simply wondering where you sourced the information for the vaccinated babies having more viruses inside their bodies than non vaccinated babies. Until they start eating solid foods and not just breastmilk or formulas, they aren't exposed to anything that could cause the bacteria's you're talking about to be produced inside the body.
@JaimeeGleisner
9 жыл бұрын
+FoxLightstep Infants have bacteria inside their digestive tract just like older children/adults. This is present in the feces. Infants can also get sick and shed those bacteria/viruses in the feces. Urine is sterile in the body and only picks up bacteria on the way out if present. You can easily google "virus in stool" and find information from reputable sources about that. Include "vaccine" with your search and vaccination information from the CDC and the NIH about vaccines that are known to shed will also pop up. I was just trying to impart precaution and information about proper disposal.

Oh man look at all of the diapers! I'm about to be 30 weeks pregnant and I'm highly considering cloth! I didn't use them with my son because people told me "Oh they are just too hard to bother with." Surely they aren't really that hard right?
@JaimeeGleisner

+Viridian Jolt I'm glad you're seriously considering using cloth! They are absolutely NOT too hard to bother with! :) I won't lie, they are some extra work and if a new mom is dealing with other issues, then cloth may not be the best option at that time. But after you've settled into your baby routine, I always felt the little extra work was well worth the benefits of using cloth. Be gentle with yourself in the beginning. You can always plan on using disposables during the first couple weeks (skipping that newborn size, meconium issues, etc.) and then move into cloth after that.

Rochelle, I see this was posted a year ago, but in case you're still diapering, I did want to respond. It does take water to wash cloth diapers, certainly, and is an important factor to take into consideration. But, a large amount of water goes into producing disposable diapers and wipes as well. Not to mention that you're still supposed to flush the poop off disposable diapers. I do not have current numbers at my finger tips, but if you looked into the the water use associated with disposables you might find it is comparable to cloth. If you still decide to go with disposables, there are several options on the market that are better for baby's skin and for the environment than others. Some brands do not contain polyacrylate gel at all. Several do not use chlorine bleach. And there are always the hybrid options, which use a disposable or compostable liner with a cloth outer. These use the least material and require only minimal washing. Perhaps this option would work for you?

Thank you, Jaimee. What a great set of videos. I noticed that you said it's best to purchase a variety of diapers initially and then see what works for you. Which diapers would you suggest to include "variety pack" of diapers to try initially and how many of these until I figure out what will work for me and the baby?
@JaimeeGleisner
9 жыл бұрын
Joy Redmond I recommend trying 1-2 of each variety you are interested in. So if you really don't think you'll like fitteds or prefolds, then start out with some pockets and all in ones. Conversely, if premium diapers aren't in the budget or you like the idea of simple pieces of cloth with a cover, then try out some prefolds or maybe even some flats. If you are totally uncertain what you'll like best, then try 1 cover + a few prefolds, and 1 each of other diapers and go from there. You can always cloth diaper part time at first until you get the feel for it and know what type you want more of. Good luck!

Andrea Mock I had considered including a few flat folding techniques, but the reality is that flats are so rarely used in the states that I was afraid it would be informational overload for parents just starting out with cloth. We never included flats in the presentations given at the natural parenting stores I worked at for this very reason. I have found that most parents that use flats didn't start out with them, but transitioned to them after getting used to other cloth diapers first. They definitely have their pros, but also several cons that make them much less desirable for many parents. It had always been my intention to make a second video with more advanced information for those seeking more than just the introductory stuff, but just ran out of time. Now I've got 3 kids and am done diapering! :)

NO NO NO AND JUST NO!! please do not listen to this part of the series! I'm part of a large cloth diapering group and we do NOT recommend cd "safe" detergent nor do we recommend home made detergent! It is very very weak and does not contain the proper ingredients to clean human waste! If the dipes don't get cleaned properly it can lead to ammonia burn and severe rashes. Tons and tons of moms have the most success with tide. The whole "detergent build up" thing is a myth. Please join some groups and do more advanced research.
@JaimeeGleisner
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, as you'll notice I do not actually recommend making your own detergent either. I have never had good luck with that nor heard of others having particularly good luck with that while cloth diapering- tends to lead to grey diapers. However, I do stand by using cloth diaper safe detergents as do many, many cloth diapering retailers and informational websites. I have seen first hand how using a non-safe detergent can lead to diaper stink and repelling. I have also had detergent build up on my own diapers and had to strip them vigorously to get rid of it. This is not a myth and something parents should be aware of. I have been a part of many natural parenting and cloth diapering groups over the past 8 years, read many things, taught at three different stores in three different states, talked to many different people first hand, experienced many things myself, and tried many things to solve problems I encountered along the way as I exclusively cloth diapered all three of my children. I'd say that's some advanced "research." What works for one person may not work for another and I always think it is best to make solid recommendations and parents can go from there with their own research and experimenting.

I think that this is an important opposing viewpoint to note for the many prospective cloth diaper-ers who will be watching this excellent series of videos. I have to agree with the previous reviewer. I understand that some families experience problems with sensitive skin and mainstream detergents, but I've also spoken with many families who have experienced serious stink issues while using just small amounts of "CD safe" detergents as you have recommended. I have been using Tide for five months now and have not experienced any issues. While some diaper companies do recommend these special "detergents" (which they manufacture), many other big-name brands (Fuzzibunz, GroVia, Best Bottoms, Rumparooz.....) recommend mainstream detergents like Tide (as long as they do not contain fabric softeners, which I think we can all agree cause repelling issues). The blog below lists links to many diaper companies' recommended mainstream detergents. cgmrb.blogspot.com/2013/10/cloth-diaper-washing-myth-busters.html?m=1

Katie, your product doesn't have any of the classic "no-no's" that would require using double liners or switching to disposables for the duration of the rash. However, anytime wax and oil are in the product I would personally use a liner, though I would not say it is a must.
