Ah yes. Quite another satisfying and perplexing development made when observing the study of Friedrich Nietzsche. He really understood the human condition and humanity’s struggle to understand what is good and what is evil and how to grow past both those concepts. Fascinating he is as a philosopher and a human being

I don't agree with this analyse : according me, the abyss in this metaphore symbolises more the human nature in itself, its violent temperament, all the atrocities that humanity is capable of... The more you look into history, the more you understand human psychology, the more you understand what we are fondamentally... Too much time learning about criminology, about war crimes or crimes against humanity, may have severe effects on your mental health... At least this is my interpretation, that I find more coherent than that one ! And to avoid any lost in translation, it would be better to read his works in german of course...

I think before everyone who sees this video decides to take this as fact; its important to know that our understanding of morality has since evolved. The merits of Nietzsche's writing are profound and paved a way forward, but are not entirely accurate to the nature of humans. It is true that good & evil is subjective, but we must understand precisely why that is the case, and what the actual foundations of morals even are. To put it simply, what your most fundamental values are will define what you perceive as good and bad, a fundamental value being that which is valued intrinsically & in and of itself. For example; almost all of us desire to be happy, or in other words to achieve a state of eudaimonia (a state of life satisfaction), from this - we determine that all things which make us happier to be good & anything that gets in the way of that to be bad. We may become happy when we see others happy at an intrinsic level, we may become happy when we accomplish something difficult, when we pursue creative freedom & many more things. We're all trying to juggle and balance these things to optimize our own individual happiness, and we create rules and logic to try to do that - or in other words; morality. Now, with this deeper understanding of what morality actually is, it becomes quite apparent that there is an issue in the way Nietzsche views the world. It is indeed true that there is virtue in having control over oneself and your environment, but at the same time he disregards & neglects the way in which one can find happiness in having empathy, and compassion & kindness. His internal calculations have lead him to this conclusion, and has been determined by his personal life experiences. We are however fortunate enough to be able to access information about ourselves & others that Nietzsche did not have, and his calculations are inaccurate - there is a better world on the horizon beyond lusting for power, there are things which can fulfill you that cannot be attained through power & force, but through gentle & genuine compassion. We must strive to understand one another, lest we miss out on something important.

Oh I gazed into the abyss once , its endless gnawing corrosive darkness displeased me, not because of the nature of it but because a place such as that , which has seen generations of human minds pass through its unknown and mysterious depths should have been well lit.

Good and evil are man made constructs, but I would argue that there is still advantages and disadvantages to certain behavior. If you promote kindness and compassion, you will typically have a community where people take care of each other. While promoting selfishness and racism, typically promote violence. I personally would rather live in the first example.

But if Nietzsche is stating that evil is born from a lust for unattainable power, then isn’t he agreeing that evil exists? Especially since almost every human on the planet has a lust for power and nobility. Surely it’s almost impossible to argue otherwise that looking beyond good and evil is possible. And could you please explain what you meant by thinking of things as just evil is damaging? And also how should we navigate philosophically otherwise? I’m genuinely just interested and want to understand more. Thank you. Great video!

Hi there, glad you liked my video <3 Well, Nietzsche to my understanding simply doesn't believe in Evil as something that exists outside of people's minds. In other words, he thinks its a mere concept that is slowing down progress of human development mentally, as well as materially. It is just that, Nietzsche perceives the concept of evil as something damaging. He believes so, because since everybody inherently has the will to power and some people achieve it easier that others, it incentivizes other people (who couldn't achieve it as easily) to perceive that success as "evil", thus giving up on pursuing same ideals, eventually leaving those people miserable. This is simply Nietzsche's view with my interpretation, when it comes to living I personally prefer stoic view and philosophy :)

What counts as a ship, or any object for that matter, is completely arbitrary - if you remove the sails, the deck, the hull planks, when does it stop being a ship? There’s a boundary there which is defined by us humans ^^ and in the same way, we can argue both that our cells are replaced and our personality changed and that our memories and body and genes are largely similar, all dependent on what we define as a person. My answer to the ship of theseus would therefore be that it doesn’t really matter - the Ship of Theseus exists in this theoretical universe where change is the exception and not the rule when in fact, and I can’t remember where this quote is from, change is the only constant in the real world. Hope that made sense and wasn’t too rambly 😂

No. Thats the beauty of change. However, there are two paths of change, a positive and a negative change, one can lead us to become more of who we are(Which is basically who we wish to be), and the other can lead further from who we are and closer to who we are not(Which is basically who wish not to be).
