Connecting all the corners forms a cube. But hey, sharper corners looks more impressive

This seems to be a test to see the public reaction on it, both in the field and online. In the field, on making the general public guessing what kind of modern art is this. Online, on making the online public guessing whether this is a video Turing test or not.

+Epic Waffles A lot of works on it have been refocusing on the Cubli, which is indeed a cube. And a also the Hedgehog, the 'offspring' between Pink Spike and Blue Cube. The Cubli version used flywheels instead of pendulums.

@lambdaofbacon, You are correct, there is no true Gyroscope on this device. It is done by weight shifting management. It is very well designed and I think this does have a real world application. I incorrectly used Gyroscope, I meant Gyro, which is a tiny chip on a PCB with discerns orientation which in turn tells the processor to use the steppers to shift the weight to allow the cube to balance itself. :) Sorry for the misunderstanding.
@EyebrowsMahoney

@lambdaofbacon, Well... in essence they call it a gyroscope, but not necessarily it is a true to the term gyroscope. A gyroscope to keep this entire structure stable would require too much energy and would inefficient and cumbersome, as well as may cause the entire structure to spin. There is a small sensor called a Gyro which measures discrepancies in it's orientation through a vibrating crystal. I did say gyroscope earlier but I incorrectly used an amalgamation of a term.

@ExploringBeyond what a patent troll does, is wait until someone DOES patent and develop something. Only THEN - when they have a target to sue - do they goto the patent office and try to overturn the original patent, saying that they invented it first, showing (in this case) their youtube comment as proof. The whole point is to set a broad trap, and wait for a target to pop up that could be targeted with it. Thus why they are called patent "trolls", they troll. It's a real thing that happens

@mk0frosty, A gyroscope is what makes this possible. However making a large gyroscope in the cube would cause it to spin, and it is relatively uncontrollable. This type of balancing ability does not force it to spin, and is more controllable since it isn't at the mercy of so many other forces. Just gravity and the poking. :) Consider the applications of an accurate balancing system. It is almost unfathomable the possibilities!

@juddglissen1, The point is to advance robotics technology to make them 100% autonomous. If they can work on it till it is 100% fool proof think of the applications for self balancing systems.

@ratcrib you mean defying physics, right? cuz you know.... instable equilibrium can only be stabilized dynamically. There are 3 fundamental equilibrium stances: stable (pendulum, coffee pot), instable (a ball on a ball, an inverted pendulum) and neutral ( a ball on a flat horizontal surface

@ruuman You're wrong. You can write whatever you want and patent it, that's how bad the USPO is. Sure, it needs to pass certain guidelines but you don't need a proof of concept for the patent, that is why a lot of businesses are disgusted of the patent system thanks to patent trolls.

@mk0frosty this is an outcome of exploring newer, alternate methods of balancing devices, and this particular method has more pros than a gyroscope: less power, less movement (less wear and tear), smaller, etc.
