Good kits for beginners. These kits will help build confidence for more challenging firemaking projects.

Don't buy one of these fire pistons. They are crap. I have tried to ignite numerous things with it... charred cloth I made myself, cotton ball, toilet tissue, paper towel, charred punk wood, newspaper, amadou, etc. It will only ignite amadou and the char cloth which comes with it. It should ignite the other things I tried but it does not. This fire piston is a waste of money.

I heard it's one of the hardest ways to get fire started and should only be used for an absolute last resort. Any moisture will work against you greatly. But I'll be honest I'm having trouble with it too.

@@alexandercrash2191 What you heard is nonsense put into circulation by sellers of the cheap garbage versions to explain away the fact their cheap garbage versions don't always work. If the material you are trying to ignite is dry, it will work every time, unless the piston is defective or it's not being worked with enough speed / force.

🤔 hmm... I did see metal shavings from trying to slam it down enough times. That may have created a small gap to allow to much air to escape.

@@alexandercrash2191 That indicates the metal is cheap garbage. Shavings coming off can definitely create a small gap which allows too much air to escape.

Insure the o-ring is coated with grease sufficiently enough to offer a good seal as you insert the piston into the cylinder. Charcoal impregnated cotton cloth is my favorite choice for tinder. Speed and force are what is needed for this to work. Same principle as a diesel engine. Compression and temperature is what ignites the tinder. You will have to practice with this to learn the best force compressing the piston to achieve ignition. It works well if you learn how to use it. Don't let others dishearten you with negative reviews as these are usually individuals who haven't learned properly how to use the fire piston. I'm 66 years old and a retired Navy seabee who was in the navy expeditionary combat command, I carried the fire piston only, no other source of fire, ignition devices....because it has always worked for me.
